Rubber (Blu-ray Review)

While watching various Magnolia and Magnet releases they would always show a preview of a tire that killed a bird using it’s telekinetic powers.  I always dismissed it, because it really didn’t say anything.  It was amusing, but never caught my attention.  As all of these conventions started to come to my area, and fellow staff member Aaron Neuwirth reviewed its theatrical release, I became kind of curious.  I loved the poster artwork.  It was pretty stylish and outrageous.  Then the Blu-ray came in the mail and I got antsy.  How would I go about reviewing a Blu-ray whose main star is a killer rubber tire with destructive mind powers?  I’ve done my best in trying to explain and review Rubber in the following article.  Enter at your own risk.  Continue reading ‘Rubber (Blu-ray Review)’

The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (Blu-ray Review)

They always say that films featuring the identical subject matter come in two’s.  This happened in the mid 90’s with To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar and Australia’s The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. A little over fifteen years have passed since Priscilla made her debut in cinemas and she is now ready to be unleashed on the Blu-ray format!  How will it fair against its contemporaries?  The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is not a traditional musical, but does feature performances by men in drag.  These things are only a side note, because The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is a lot more than just drag queens.  Get on the bus and find out what all the fuss is about!  Continue reading ‘The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (Blu-ray Review)’

Original Sin (Blu-ray Review)

To say that time really flies when reviewing Blu-ray discs would be an understatement.  Has it really been 10-11 years since Original Sin premiered in theaters to critical dismay?  It seems like only yesterday that this film, or the anticipation of this film, was creating a bit of a stir do to the steamy starring duo of beautiful people like Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie.  I remember watching the theatrical trailer and thinking that they really pulled out all the stops in a traditional romance tale.  Yes, that was just in the trailer.  Now that we are in the present, it was finally time to sit down with the newly minted Blu-ray in hand and see if Original Sin was truly as bad as they had said it was.  You may be pleasantly surprised at the results.  I know I was.  Continue reading ‘Original Sin (Blu-ray Review)’

Waiting For Forever (Blu-ray Review)

There comes a time when you are given an assignment that you don’t really want, but deep down you do want if even for pure aesthetic value.  Those “aesthetics” would be Rachel Bison.  Whether Waiting For Forever would be good or not is secondary.  There are those times where you just have to set aside your differences and take a couple of grenades for the team.  This be those times.  Reading and looking at the cover I am reminded of Benny & Joon in that it may be a  modern day re-telling of that story with different, but the same, eccentric characters with added  wit to spare.  Whether that’s the case or not, I won’t make you wait for forever to see if this Blu-ray is worth your time or not.  Come on in.  Continue reading ‘Waiting For Forever (Blu-ray Review)’

The Cat O’Nine Tails (Blu-ray Review)

Dario Argento, be thy name!  Why So Blu and Blue Underground are back to bring you even more from the Italian master of horror in The Cat O’Nine Tails.  The Cat O’Nine Tails is Dario Argento’s second film in the so-called “Animal” trilogy, but unlike his “Three Mothers” trilogy later on you don’t really need to see these films in any sequential order.  They’re also referred to animal, because each contains a particular animal in the title of the film.  The first one is called The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, then The Cat O’Nine Tails, and finally Four Flies On Grey Velvet. No, none of these films deal with any animals either.  They’re also NOT horror films in the traditional sense.  Argento didn’t really get into the traditional horror theme until 1975 with Deep Red. Argento’s earlier work is classified as “giallo,” meaning thriller.  Okay, so without any more hesitation let’s dig into The Cat O’Nine Tails on Blu-ray!  Continue reading ‘The Cat O’Nine Tails (Blu-ray Review)’

Hall Pass (Blu-ray Review)

It’s been a while since we reviewed a dye-in-the-wool raunchy comedy here at Why So Blu.  Hall Pass is the latest comedy film by The Farrelly Brothers starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis.  This is not just Hall Pass, though.  This is Hall Pass: ENLARGED EDITION.  Will the Blu-ray promise to be…enlarged?  Okay, I feel weird now.  Hall Pass also features Christina Applegate, and a bunch of familiar folks in supporting and cameo roles.  I love my raunchy comedies like you wouldn’t believe, but it’s been a while since The Farrelly Brothers have done something worthy of note.  Did they succeed with their latest flick or has Judd Apatow and his gang of misfits stripped The Brothers out of their raunch title belts?  Read on and find out.   Continue reading ‘Hall Pass (Blu-ray Review)’
