Rush is an incredibly solid drama that features fine film craftsmanship on display, solid performances from the lead actors, and a well-oiled story that respects its audience. While the film is based on facts, it rarely dips into dramatized scenes that lessen the entertainment value to be found in the film. It is the kind […]

Drinking Buddies is a step forward in the film world for writer/director Joe Swanberg, who has specialized in making films of the mumblecore variety. To catch some up on what that term means, the concept of mumblecore revolves around independent films that are very low budget, largely improvised by the performers (generally amateur actors), and […]

Here is a movie that has a promising premise that could have been better pulled off if it was either structured differently or came out a decade earlier. The idea of competing magicians in Las Vegas is a good one, but The Incredible Burt Wonderstone does not quite have a script to really pull off […]

In Iowa, butter carving is as cut-throat as a Presidential election, plagued with scandal, greed, blackmail, and sex – except with butter! When long-reigning champion butter sculptor, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), is forced to step down, his zealous wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner), enters the competition herself to fight for their status as butter royalty. A win seems […]

I really don’t have anything against this movie for what it tries to be. Given that someone already went ahead and called pull quote credit by proclaiming People Like Us as “The feel good movie of the summer,” I get the feeling that anyone that is going into this movie will probably have a good […]

Every second counts in this sexy, stylish action-thriller starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Syfried. In a future where time is literally money and aging stops at 25, the only way to stay alive is to earn, borrow, steal or inherit more time. But when a poor, working-class man (Timberlake) is falsely accused of murder, he […]

I cannot imagine it being at all simple to develop a story set around a future society, with a specific set of rules in place. For all the fun it must be to describe the ways characters must behave and dress and how the look of the world has changed, getting down to the logistics […]

So I somehow managed to double-book myself between press screenings for In Time and The Rum Diaries. Bummer! It was a hard decision to make between which one I would ultimately have to pass on. In Time looked promising in the action department, where as The Rum Diaries features my new favorite, the beautiful Miss […]

Studio Head: Man, remember back in the 80s when all of those body-switching comedy movies were really popular? We made tons of money then. Do we have any ideas like that out there now? Studio Plot Pitcher: Well sir, there are some big, big comedies recently, which have all benefited from having an R-rating, as […]

For a movie titled ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ to play itself completely straight, it sure does come off as awful silly in many instances. More importantly, the film comes off as very dull in many instances, which is quite unfortunate. Despite having a big name cast, big name producers, a big name director, and eight credited […]

In 1982, Disney released an original science fiction film known as TRON. Despite its unique concept and the presence of Jeff Bridges, the film was only met with moderate success, developing a cult following over the years. TRON’s most notable aspect, at the time, was in regards to the way it pioneered the use of computer technology to create its special effects. Despite this notable quality, the film was disqualified from Oscar consideration regarding the special effects, because it was deemed to have cheated. Now, 28 years later, due to the power young geeks who grew up watching TRON and are now working for Disney, a sequel has been made.

This past summer at San Diego’s Comic-Con, I had the very rare opportunity to speak with Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges regarding his role in the revival of the Tron franchise. I had asked the seasoned screen vet what his reaction was when he was approached to do a sequel since the first film came out nearly […]

I hope some comments answer the question I am going to start this off with. Why this film is called The Next Three Days? After sitting through this silly thriller, which consists of a lot of empty entertainment that can easily fall apart for the viewer if they try to step back and think about […]

It was nearly 30 years ago when Disney released a science fiction film that altered the landscape of special effects. Known simply as Tron, the film included the likes of the now Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. The story was simple; a guy gets warped into a computer and has to find his way out. Little […]
