Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
Rolling on through their catalog and still putting out 4K physical media, I’m grateful Disney is still doing it and has also landed on 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The Robert Zemeckis film not only was a hybrid of animation and live action, but also the perfect mesh of youth and adult enjoyment. The film comes to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray with an upgrade in the picture department and a new Atmos track to hear it by. Unfortunately there are no new extras to add this time around, but the former Blu-ray is included for those. This arrives on the format on December 7th. October was quite a crowded month in terms of big new theatrical releases. When that happens, of course some thing or things get left by the wayside and aren’t the prime choice of movie goers. One of the biggies that happened to was Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel. There’s been a lot of huffing and puffing about Ridley Scott’s hypothesizing as to why it didn’t pan out, but that’s beside the point. The film is excellent and you should certainly check it out whenever you have the time, wherever you can find it to watch (Hopefully not on your phone though, but if that’s your thing, so be it). Next to theatrical, its coming the best way for home possible, as a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release with an Atmos track. There is one featurette with it, but its over 30 minutes long, so that’s at least a nice conceit. The Last Duel arrives on the format online and in stores on December 14th. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the wonderful surprise and jolt to the Marvel Cinematic Universe we didn’t see coming. Coming in at the tail end of the summer and kicking all sorts of butt, the film provided a brand new flex for the MCU. Now its coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray after already dropping on Disney+ a few weeks back to promote their IMAX aspect ratio option. This release comes with an Atmos track, some deleted scenes and a couple of featurettes. That awesome making of that’s on Disney+? Nowhere to be found. Nonetheless, this is how we physical media lovers will have to best enjoy the film. It arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ay on November 30th. Wow, its been 30 years since The Addams Family found new life in cinematic form. A comic strip turned beloved television show, their legacy still carries strong today with new animated movies as well as a Netflix series around the corner. Paramount is celebrating the Barry Sonnenfeld film turning 30 with a new 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. This disc will include a new interview with Sonnenfeld as well as a new cut of the film featuring a deleted dance sequence fully restored and inserted back in. One can only hope the superior sequel, Addams Family Values, will get some of this love in the near future. Sony has followed up their well regarded and popular 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray Columbia Classics Collection with a second volume. Released on October 12th, the box set features the debuts of Anatomy of a Murder, Oliver!, Taxi Driver, Stripes, Sense and Sensibility and The Social Network. Francis Ford Coppola has been busy during quarantine recutting various films of his. Last year saw the new edition of The Godfather, Part III and just a couple months ago we were treated to a new cut of Dementia 13. We even had another version of Apocalypse Now recently. The Outsiders is having its turn in the sun now with Coppola’s The Complete Novel hitting theaters and coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Another holiday season, another brand new Lord Of The Rings box set home video release. Last year saw both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies debut on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. This year, the Midde-Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition arrives with an upgrade in packaging, some physical swag and a new bonus disc. Standard Blu-rays and digital copy codes are included again. Each film now features its own case and slip cover, housed all together in a magnetically sealed box that shifts into different shapes for different options with which to store on a shelf and display. Originally slated for release on October 26th, the set is now releasing on November 16th. Disney is back at it in turning their rides into blockbuster films with Jungle Cruise, starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. The film brings to life the jungle adventure while getting fed rapid dad jokes boat excursion from their theme park. It wound up being one of the biggest global hits of the summer and appears to be getting a sequel even. The film will be hitting the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format on November 16th. Crazy to think this December will mark 25 years since Scream hit theaters and became a phenomenon that changed the horror genre. The upcoming fifth Scream film will have more years than between the influencer Halloween when it celebrated 20 years shortly after Scream‘s release. Paramount, the current home video rights holder, is celebrating the milestone with the 25th Anniversary Edition 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release. A debut on the format, it showcases a new little featurette of reflection from the set of 2022’s Scream. The disc came out back on October 19th, but there have been some fulfilment issues getting this one out there, so some people have it and some don’t. One of the more sad under performers at the US box office this year was James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Though, it did finish in the top 10 for global box office which is nice. The film was a breath of fresh air compared the that first whatever it was. Its made its way to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray, landing on shelves October 26th. The film comes loaded with a native 4K image and Dolby Atmos track to support it. There is also a James Gunn commentary and a host of featurettes to line up some nice bonus features. While I didn’t know much about the film at all prior to seeing the trailer, the fact that a film like The Protégé was getting a big theatrical release excited me. An low key action thriller with a star that isn’t quite a household name (At one movie I saw the trailer with an audience member loudly blurted out “Who the hell is Maggie Q?”) feels like the type of “big new streaming movie of the week” for the like of a Netflix, Amazon or Hulu. Alas, the film made nary a scratch during the pandemic era box office and is making its way to the home video market where hopefully more people will see it. It has been rather nice to see M. Night Shyamalan come back into the fold and shake the stigma of him being a has-been filmmaker. Having some well reviewed hits will tend to do that. Moving on from his Unbreakable series, he now sets sights for where his career can now go. First stop is Old, about a magic beach that rapidly ages people. The film was a rather solid hit at the box office this past summer. This high concept horror tale arrived on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray back on October 19th.
