Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier (who achieved critical success with Blue Ruin), Green Room is a film that critics are calling “the best screw-tightening siege movie of the year” (Rolling Stone). The inspirational feature film Endgame, starring Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Ivonne Coll (Jane The Virgin), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite) and Justina Machado (The Purge: Anarchy), will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on July 5 via Shout! Factory, and will have bonus features including Spanish-language subtitles. Endgame is a fictional story based on true events – how an impoverished high school in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, started a chess team and went on to become state champions. The touching family-friendly film also touches on the subjects of immigration, teen drinking, being true to one’s self, and bullying. Endgame was directed by Carmen Marrón (Go For It!), a former guidance counselor with a dream of making films with positive role models for Latino kids. Shot in Brownsville in just 19 days, the film captures how a determined and caring teacher and his chess club found a way to help students rise above their challenges to meet a brighter future. In The Pack, man’s best friend becomes his worst nightmare when a horde of bloodthirsty wild dogs descends upon a family’s farmhouse. Generating a steadily mounting sense of dread, The Pack cleverly toys with genre conventions before it goes in for the kill. The Pack also includes the featurette “The Making of The Pack” and theatrical trailer as bonus features. Fans can pre-order their copies now by visiting ShoutFactory.com. This film sort of kicks off a kind of werewolf month for the label in July. I don’t know if it was by intention, design or by accident, but there are three lycanthrope related films being released on Blu-ray by them within the coming weeks. This, being the most modern and the other two being vintage films making the Blu-ray jump (Bad Moon and The Boy Who Cried Werewolf out later). Okay, this isn’t werewolves sorta speak (Its just straight up wolves), its canine-esque fueled thriller with people under attack from them. And maybe I spotted a moon here or there. Leave me alone I’m trying to throw this all together somehow. Continue reading ‘The Pack (Blu-ray Review)’

First off, I wanted to let everyone know that Warner Bros. did not supply this 4K UHD Blu-ray for me to review, but instead I purchased it myself out of my love and affinity for the Rocky franchise, and most recently Creed in this case (as I simply could not resist that gorgeous, awe-inspiring black slip cover). I’ll admit though that I’m a few months late to this 4K Blu-ray party, but what matters most is that I’m here now, and I’m staying. Thus far the 4K UHD Blu-ray format has been a rewarding experience, but I’ll admit to having a few system hiccups (don’t make the mistake of buying Lionsgate’s Sicario 4K Blu-ray) since my review of the new equipment I possess here. You have to expect that from early adoption of technology, right? Nevertheless, you can’t dispute how eye-popping spectacular things are on the Sony XBR-65X930D 4K display, but I digress. We’re gathered here today to not only talk about my love for Creed and what the Rocky franchise may or may not mean to me, but more importantly how incredibly beautiful Creed is in 4K UHD Blu-ray. Let’s begin!

I will kind of start this review by echoing what I said over here in my first 4K UHD review of Star Trek. It was two months ago when Paramount Home Media Distribution announced that director J.J. Abrams’ global blockbusters Star Trek and the reason why we are all here, Star Trek Into Darkness, would be the studio’s first two titles released on the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The releases also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise in 2016. Don’t know what 4K Blu-ray is all about? Well, it’s simple. 4K UHD represents the next evolution in home entertainment, offering four times the resolution and more than double the number of colors available with full HD. In addition, these 4K UHD releases deliver exceptional vibrancy and contrast through High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which reveals hidden details and shades of color that more closely mimic real life. So now that we have that mumbo jumbo out of the way what do you say we get started? Continue reading ‘Star Trek Into Darkness (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

So a couple of months ago Paramount Home Media Distribution announced that director J.J. Abrams’ global blockbusters Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness would be the studio’s first two titles released on the brand new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The releases also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise in 2016. What’s this I hear about 4K on Why So Blu? Well, 4K UHD represents the next evolution in home entertainment, offering four times the resolution and more than double the number of colors available with full HD. In addition, these spectacular 4K UHD releases deliver exceptional vibrancy and contrast through High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which reveals hidden details and shades of color that more closely mimic real life. And best of all…WSB is now 4K compliant (see here)! Let the good times roll…indeed. Continue reading ‘Star Trek (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

It appears I have very defined limits when it comes to the humor of Sacha Baron Cohen. A lot of his edgy stuff tends to be funny in the moment, but it rarely sticks with me. Obviously that kind of humor works best for him when it’s a mix of candid moments set in reality pushed to their extremes by Cohen’s intense commitment to character. The Brothers Grimsby is more along the lines of The Dictator, as he has developed a fictional feature film with co-writer Phil Johnston, though this time it functions as an action-comedy. All of that in mind, the results are not good.

Writer/director Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Lifeforce) puts an uproarious spin on the zombie apocalypse movie in 1985’s cult classicTHE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, starring Clu Gulager (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), James Karen (Mulholland Drive) and Don Calfa (Weekend at Bernie’s). Considered one of the campiest undead romps of its time, the film helped launch the career of scream queen Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama) and features a killer soundtrack with tracks from many songs from punk artists such as The Cramps, T.S.O.L. SSQ and 45 Grave. On July 19, 2016, SCREAM FACTORY™ is proud to present THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set, which includes a brand new 2K scan of the film and over 12 hours of extras! I guess it all depends upon what you want to call it, The Event Series or Season 10, but make no mistake about it, The X-Files was revived some 13 years later and came back stronger than ever this past January on prime time television. If you suffered with me through my epic Blu-ray review of the massive 55-disc box set last year (found right here), then you’ll know fans don’t get any bigger than this guy right here. I freaking love everything about the show, even putting up with the stupid mythology episodes when I have to, which did hamper this short 6-episode “season” a bit, but I digress. However, when it comes to The X-Files, I’ll take what I can get. You hearing me, Scully? That’s why I’m overjoyed not only to have six new episodes on the Blu-ray home media format, but also honored to once again to be covering/reviewing a television “event” series like this that’s so near and dear to my probably cardiovascular diseased heart. I want to believe and I know so do y’all so let’s get started. Continue reading ‘The X-Files – The Event Series (Blu-ray Review)’

This Hollywood-based effort from writer/director Terrence Malick seemed to only leave a small impact in the year of its release, but Knight of Cups certainly feels like the director continuing to challenge himself. At the risk of repeating himself to the point of self-parody, one of the most elusive auteur directors made a Los Angeles odyssey that could easily be rated ‘O’ for obscure. It almost defies reason to label the film as good or bad, but depending on one’s appreciation of Malick’s style as of late, there will be varying levels of tolerance for what this film has to offer. Perhaps this home video release will allow others a chance to figure things out for themselves.

Alex Haley spent 12 years combing through historical records in order to trace find his lineage all the way back to before his ancestors were stolen from Africa and enslaved. This was an incredibly difficult task due of course to the fact that once an African was enslaved and taken to America, they were given a new name and were violently tortured if they were ever found engaging in activities from their native culture such as language, religion, or music. Fortunately for all of us, he became the first African American to find to be able to trace his lineage back to it’s point of origin. Roots chronicles the life of Haley’s ancestor Kuna Kinte from his birth in Africa all the way through his life as a slave into old age. We witness through all these years, thorough the beatings, the mutilations and humiliations how he still fought to hold onto his given name and heritage.

On June 28th, cult Blu-ray masterminds Blue Underground will be releasing an Edgar Wallace double feature. Continuing with their year of double features in 2016, this also could be considered a Christopher Lee or Klaus Kinski double feature as those screen legends both star in the films. Lee (Dracula: Prince of Darkness), Kinski (Venom), Suzy Kendall (Bird With the Crystal Plumage), Margaret Lee (Eugenie) and Leo Genn (The Bloody Judge) co-star in the gripping thriller Circus of Fear directed by John Moxey (Horror Hotel, The Night Stalker) and based on the novel by legendary mystery writer Edgar Wallace. In Five Golden Dragons, Hitchcock hero Robert Cummings stars in this exotic British feature from 1967, adapting one of Edgar Wallace’s celebrated Commissioner Sanders stories. Directed by ITC stalwart Jeremy Summers and produced by B-movie legend Harry Alan Towers, Five Golden Dragons combines glamorous locations, gorgeous girls, mystery, action and plenty of humor, with Christopher Lee, George Raft and Brian Donlevy among the villainous ‘dragons’ encountered. There is nothing extraordinary about Eddie the Eagle and that seems completely fitting for the film that tells the story of an earnest young man who simply had a dream. We see lots of sports movies and some approach the genre with fresh eyes, while others revel in clichés. Given the accomplishments of the real Eddie Edwards, it seems only right that the film is a success based on achieving the minimum requirements for being a rousing feature. Now you can enjoy this underdog story on Blu-ray.
