Iron Man 3 is getting closer and closer to its May 3rd release date and with all that anticipation bubbling to the surface, here is the latest and final theatrical trailer for the film, which sees Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) facing off against a powerful foe known as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). True to form, Marvel Studios is going all out to make this look like one of the action events of the year and I would be hard-pressed to argue against that, given how exciting this film looks to be. I just hope it is still hope that there is plenty of fun to be had, given Stark’s attitude and chemistry with the rest of the cast, along with knowing writer/director Shane Black’s (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) filmmaking sensibilities. Continue on to check out the brand new trailer.

[Note: This is an essay that potentially spoils everything that has so far happened on Season 3 of AMC’s The Walking Dead.]
With just a few weeks left until The Walking Dead returns to TV screens with all new episodes, I decided to write a little something to help express my thoughts on the show thus far and what I hope can come from the rest of this season. Yes, there are concerns regarding the series’ budget, the number of remaining episodes, and possible behind-the-scenes drama, but while this may be more of a ‘wish list’ overall, I still think I have a reasonable number of ideas concerning how the show can be even better, considering that this current season has done so much to improve upon itself, as a whole, already. So now, here are five items that I believe can contribute to the show being better overall.

Now it is time to dig into the list of what I consider to be my favorite films of 2012. I have to say that this was not the easiest list to put together. Theatrically, I have seen 120+ films this year, so there were a lot of films to give praise to and consider how to reference in terms of their placement on this list. Some of these films certainly affected me more than others, but there were plenty that were easily strong enough to potentially wind up on my year end list. As a result, the only course of action was to take, was to do my best to give praise to the other films on this list by being sure to have honorable and special mentions for all the films that were in contention. Still, I am very satisfied by this final list that I have put together, mainly because it is my list and it contains films that I really enjoyed the most this year, for various reasons. So here we go (by the way, lots of Easter Eggs hidden in the pictures):

This is not really a post of joy, but every year does see the release of films that are just not good. I do not try to seek out these films, with the majority being ones that I did think could have redeemable elements, but that just wasn’t the case here. This list contains what I think were all the biggest misses of the year, which I watched in full and could not handle. I also have a list of disappointing films, which are not necessarily terrible, but certainly far from living up to their potential. It is fortunate that I had a much harder time (in a good way) putting together the “best of” list, but for now, here is a list of films I would put at the bottom of an otherwise very good year. Also and unfortunately, I did not get to cross Alex Cross before the year ended, so I’m just going to have to call this the Alex Cross Memorial Worst Films List for now.

Kicking off my Top 10 year-end lists for 2012, here are my Top 10 Blu-rays that I have enjoyed and could not pass up giving full recommendations to. The following list is set of films that I consider to be some of the best that the Blu-ray format has had to offer for this year. Much like last year, I stayed true to some rules; I have to have actually watched the movie on Blu-Ray, recognize it for its quality video and audio transfers, delved into the special features, and most importantly, I did not put any film on the list that may also be on my “Top 10 Films of the year” list. This means excluding films like Cabin in the Woods (which has a fantastic Blu-ray). I followed these rules for the sake of keeping my list interesting, so here we go:

I know I wasn’t the only person bummed that GI JOE: Retaliation was abruptly moved a whole 9 months later from its original June 2012 release date all the way to this March, for a 3D post-conversion no less (with plenty of rumors surrounding other behind the scenes fiddling). Regardless, the newest trailer for the upcoming action-packed sequel has hit the interwebs and still looks to be a lot of fun. Continue on to check out the trailer, as well as the brand new poster for the film. Go JOE!

This year has seen the release of several apps related to the big blockbuster films of the year. Films like The Avengers, The Dark Knight and The Amazing Spider-Man have all gotten apps that directly relate to their Blu-ray releases, giving viewers the ability to sync up their smartphone or tablet devices to their Blu-ray players and access all sorts of exclusive content. It has been an interesting sort of experiment in terms of making the home viewing experience more interactive for the viewer. Now Men In Black 3 has been given similar treatment, but in a slight twist on the idea, the Men In Black 3 Movie Touch app allows you to only view all the exclusive content, while watching the film on a portable device of some kind. Given that I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed Men In Black 3 (Review HERE), I was happy to try this experience out. Continue on to learn more about the details of the MIB3 Movie Touch app.

So here’s a film that I know connected with a lot of people that were able to see it in theaters and will probably connect with those who seek it out on Blu-ray, when it arrives this coming February. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful coming-of-age film, with nice performances all around, and it hits shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on February 12, 2013. It is a film based on the best-selling novel from author Stephen Chbosky, who actually wrote and directed the film as well. From the reaction it received, the film seems to be in line to take up the mantle as one of the best films about surviving in high school, akin to some of the work from John Hughes, among others (I’ll support Rushmore in this case). I know I certainly liked it (review HERE). From what I can tell, the Blu-ray does not seem to be lacking in more content to explore, regarding the film and those involved in bringing the novel to life. Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release. Continue reading ‘Become Infinite With ‘THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER’ on Blu-ray & DVD on February 12th’

This is certain to excite a few people. While I am a Star Wars guy through and through, I certainly cannot deny that Star Trek is one of the things that will get the masses excited, especially now that J.J. Abrams had a hand in reinvigorating the franchise with his 2009 reboot. So for anyone asking themselves, “Hey, where’s the sequel at already?” here is the chance to find out what is in store for them, as a 9-minute sneak preview will be arriving in IMAX 3D theaters on December 14th. This should be especially nice for those already planning on seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on opening night, as they will be getting this special bonus with their film, much like how The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were given the same treatment. The Star Trek footage will be the first 9 minutes of the highly anticipated film and it will be exclusively shown in Digital IMAX 3Dtheaters worldwide on that date. Continue on to find the full press release with all the details. Now Updated with the First Official Poster, Continue reading ‘‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Preview In IMAX This December’

Disney and Marvel have decided to get the ball rolling with Iron Man 3, as today sees the release of the brand new debut trailer for the film. A new poster and several pictures have also been released, further showing off what audiences around the world are in store for, when the latest in the adventures for Tony Stark hits theaters on May 3, 2013. Once again, Iron Man has managed to assemble a pretty incredible cast and crew to make this a movie that deserves attention and certainly after the success of The Avengers, all eyes are focused on what Marvel Studios will be able to pull off in Phase 2 of their Cinematic Universe. On Saturday, October 20th, at LA Live Regal Cinema, John Carpenter was present at the 12th Annual Screamfest to receive a Career Achievement Award and to be a part of a Q&A before a screening of one of his films, The Prince of Darkness, which was celebrating its 25th Anniversary. John Carpenter has of course had a lengthy career, largely working on the outside of the Hollywood system to make movies on his own terms. He has also been responsible for several classics and game changers in the horror genre, including Halloween and The Thing. I was in attendance at the Q&A and managed to record all of it, which is posted in this article along with images of the 13 exclusive posters that were for sale at Screamfest on this day. Proceed further to hear this Q&A and check out the awesome posters that were on the scene. Continue reading ‘Screamfest 2012: John Carpenter Q&A And Original Artwork’

Opening night of Screamfest 2012, I was able to see the new horror film, The Collection. Horror fans may not have too much trouble remembering The Collector, which came out back in 2009, but others may struggle when realizing that The Collection is actually a sequel to that film. Now The Collection is not really a film that solely depends on knowledge from the previous entry and similarly it is a different sort of beast from the first film. The Collector was very much a cat and mouse thriller, set inside a house, which happened to incorporate a lot of deadly traps, labeling the film as a part of the ‘torture porn’ horror sub-genre. The Collection may have a similar setup, but this time the majority of the action is placed inside the hideout of the collector, which turns the film into more of a funhouse of horror traps and grizzly images, flipping the series on its head. It may or may not be worth your time, but it’s a mean, lean, horror flick that is a fun enough ride. Continue reading ‘Screamfest 2012: The Collection (Movie Review)’

I just received the latest hardcover edition of Robert Kirkman’s long running graphic novel season, The Walking Dead, which has put me in a good enough mood to share some thoughts on the upcoming season of The Walking Dead. As I am about to be writing weekly thoughts on the upcoming season, episode by episode for HHWLOD, and because it is not often that I have a moderate amount of time to do my own editorials, I figured I could provide a bit of a primer on where I stand with this popular AMC series. It is in a good position to deliver possibly the best season yet, but it also still faces challenges, if it does not learn from its own past missteps. A continuing story of survival horror can no doubt be an uphill battle. Continue reading ‘Gearing Up For Season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead’’

I’m sure plenty of people are looking forward to this one. A new film that once again brings together Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer into an all new action/adventure film. Well now the trailer for The Lone Ranger has arrived and it looks to be all sorts of fun. Packed with fun western-style adventure and plenty of Depp zaniness. As long as this doesn’t turn into another Wild Wild West, I think this could be another fun adventure that brings an old property to life in an all new way. Continue on to see the debut trailer for The Lone Ranger, along with the poster and a few new images. Continue reading ‘Hi Ho Silver! The Lone Ranger Trailer Debuts’

Another summer at the movies has come to an end and I do enjoy providing some sort of wrap up to this busy time for the cinema. I decided to do things a bit different this year though. I have listed what I consider my top five films of the summer (alphabetically), along with the worst films of the summer, the biggest disappointments, the biggest surprises, and a few indies that deserve more attention. I should note that while I did manage to see a large amount of films this summer, posting at least 2 reviews of new releases a week, there were a few that I missed (avoided) as well. Also, I always encourage interaction in these posts. What were everyone else’s favorites of the summer (possible putting Avengers and Dark Knight Rises aside)? Or surprises and disappointments? It is always fun to dig into these questions. Continue reading ‘Summer 2012’s Hits, Misses, And The Films In Between’

On Sunday, August 19th, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, CA, I was happy and intrigued to be able to sit in on a screening of the 1930 film Just Imagine. Just Imagine was an American science-fiction musical, which was made to counter the 1927 German science-fiction film Metropolis. It is a film that is rarely seen these days, but is one that has inspired many famed science fiction films since. Along with the screening of the film, this event also featured a pre-show honoring of the film’s production designer, Stephen Gooson, along with a post-show Q&A with Professor Nicholas Cull, who has written books about the effect of science fiction in pop culture. Continue on to learn more about this film and to hear audio of the pre- and post-show discussions that took place. Continue reading ‘‘Just Imagine’ Screening and Q&A’

Along with being able to attend the world premiere screening of Starship Troopers: Invasion at Comic Con, I was also very excited to have the opportunity to interview Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien, along with executive producer and screenwriter for the original Starship Troopers, Ed Neumeier, director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Halo Legends), and producer Joseph Chou. It helps that I am a big fan of the original film and found a lot to like about this all-new CGI Animated feature, with its dynamic visual presentation, slick action sequences, and solid handling on expanding the Starship Troopers universe. Coming at the end of a long week, this was a fun one-on-four interview, which was shot on video no less, so be prepared to hear me (offscreen) do my best to talk to these guys about this exciting new feature. Continue on to watch this interview. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Starship Troopers: Invasion – Video Interview’

I am a big fan of the original Starship Troopers film, so I was excited for the idea of an all new release that has come in the form of a CG animated feature from the director of Appleseed and Halo Legends. While at Comic Con, I got the chance to watch the world premiere screening of Starship Troopers: Invasion, which turned out to be a lot of fun. While more of a straight-forward sci-fi/action film, it looked great, featured some really cool action sequences, and was really able to delve visually into the world of Starship Troopers. I will have a video interview with the team behind the film posted soon as well, which includes the original Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. For now, continue on to read some of my reactions to the film along with information about the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of the film.
