It was indeed a giant block of presentations for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Taking up over two and a half hours in Hall H on Saturday at Comic Con, they had plenty of amazing things they were prepared to show audiences. Following a look at what Legendary had to offer, it then became Warner Bros. turn to add all of their work into the mix, which included heavy hitters that many people camped out the previous night to see – Man of Steel and The Hobbit. Along with one surprise that began this panel presentation, everything presented was very entertaining to see and featured a lot of exclusive looks that hopefully got people wanting to see a whole lot more. Continue on to read more about what went down under Warner Bros. watch, during these presentations. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Warner Bros. Pictures – Man Of Steel And The Hobbit’

Between the Marvel Studios panel and the presentation that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures had lined up for Hall H on Saturday at Comic Con, fans were in for all sorts of greatness to be shown to them, given that they were able to get into the very packed room. All the waiting done by anyone that was able to get into Hall H certainly paid off for sure and first up was a look at two of Legendary Pictures upcoming films that, between them, feature colossal talent, robots, and monsters. While the first film presented was something everyone knew about and were excited to get their first look at, Pacific Rim, the second film announced was a big surprise, as no one quite knew what they were watching until it was revealed to be Godzilla. Continue on to learn more about this very exciting panel. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Legendary Pictures – Pacific Rim And Godzilla’

Let’s get this out of the way now, Saturday at Comic Con was an exhausting time for anyone who wanted to get into Hall H. This is of course the biggest hall for panels at the San Diego Convention Center and Saturday proved to be the day that anyone who wanted to get in would have needed to arrive at least 4-5 hours early, as I did. It paid off however, as the first panel of the day was for Quentin Tarantino’s new movie, Django Unchained (The ‘D’ is silent). I previously wrote a post about this upcoming film already, which can be found HERE, but I was thrilled to be able to see the cast and writer/director Quentin Tarantino, along with whatever footage they brought with them. Continue on to learn a bit more about ‘Django‘s presence at Comic Con. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Django Unchained’

Many people waited in high anticipation for what was going to be seen and possibly announced during the Marvel Studios panel, which took place towards the end of the day in Hall H, at Comic Con on Saturday. The description of the panel stated that Iron Man 3 would be the main presentation, however, many people were aware Marvel would most likely be ready to share a lot of information about many more of their upcoming projects. This turned out to be true, as the panel featured several official announcements, surprise guests, and footage that will keep many people who attended talking about it. Continue on to learn more about what went down at the Marvel Studios panel. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Marvel Studios – Iron Man 3 And Other Announcements’

The Walking Dead has become a very big deal at Comic Con over the last couple of years. While the comic has been very successful, which is great for the readers and all involved, such as creator Robert Kirkman, the TV series has become a runaway success, consistently breaking ratings records for cable series. It is a huge win for AMC to have it air on their network and naturally, thousands of fans at Comic Con were excited to see whatever was in store for them at The Walking Dead Panel. Unfortunately, this panel was so incredibly packed that I was not able to make it in, but the brand new Season 3 trailer did make its debut. Continue on to see the new trailer and other glimpses of the upcoming and very anticipated season. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: The Walking Dead’

Friday at San Diego Comic Con, within the Hilton’s Indigo Ballroom, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim had a block of its biggest shows all present panels at Comic Con, including a look at their newest series, the animated TV adaptation of Black Dynamite. I was only able to see the first three Adult Swim panels, which included The Venture Brothers, NTSF:SD:SUV, and Children’s Hospital, but each one was a very entertaining experience. The creators and various cast members were present for each panel and brand new footage, or in the case of the two live-action shows, whole episodes were presented during them. Continue on to learn more about the exciting and hilarious new seasons for each of these shows. I was very happy to be able to catch the panel for Spartacus at this year’s Comic Con. Why So Blu has remained a fan of the breakout series since it first began, and while it will always be hard for everyone to get over the loss of its original star, Andy Whitfield, the show has continued on in providing a very entertaining series that manages to stylized ballets of blood and sexuality, while also delivering on interesting dramatic arcs for the various characters on the show. The latest season, titled Spartacus: War of the Damned, is not due to come out until January 2013, but the panel did have plenty to talk about, with a number of surprise guests and the reveal of the first teaser trailer. The third part of Walt Disney Studio’s Hall H presentation on Thursday at San Diego Comic Con was for their upcoming animated feature Wreck-It Ralph, which looks to be a whole lot of fun. Honestly, I have been anticipating this film, since I first heard about it back at the Disney D23 Expo last September, so having seen earlier animatics of this film all the way to now, where so much of it has been fully realized, I cannot wait to see the final product. The story seems to be literally catering to me and a whole world of people who grew up with video games of all types and it only helps that the script seems to be very clever and funny. Continue on to view the trailer and to see a new image that debuted for the sake of Comic Con. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Wreck-It Ralph’

Frankenweenie continues to be a a film I look forward to. I love the fact that Tim Burton has revisited an idea he first made into a live-action short, but has now turned into a feature-length, stop-motion animated film (not to mention in both Black & White and in 3D). It features a large voice cast that mainly consists of actors and actresses that Burton has worked with many times before, but also seems to have a script that is quite funny in a very humorously dark, but campy sort of way. Not a whole lot of new information was given in regards to this feature, but the new trailer, which debuted exclusively at Comic Con can be found, were you to continue on. Thursday in Hall H of Comic Con was packed already, due to the presence of Twilight fans, as per usual these days, but that did not mean there was not plenty more to see, which included the first look at the newest film from one of my favorite directors, Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead trilogy, The Spider-Man trilogy). I have other posts to get to, in order to properly go over all that was seen during my time in Hall H on Thursday, but why not start off with the trailer debut of Raimi’s latest feature, Oz The Great and Powerful. This is a Disney film set to provide a new point of view regarding the world seen in The Wizard of Oz and written about by its originator, Frank Baum. Fittingly from the producer of Alice in Wonderland, the film is a fantastical adventure, which looks like it could be a fun and unique experience. Continue on to watch the brand new trailer, which debuted at Comic Con, as well as get a look at the film’s poster. Continue reading ‘Comic Con 2012: Oz The Great And Powerful Trailer Debut’

His name is Django. The ‘D’ is silent. Alright ramblers, lets get ramblin’. If Brian can put up posts about the latest trailer for Step Up 4, then I guess I might as well put up a post about the latest from writer/director Quentin Tarantino. Django Unchained hits theaters this Christmas and it is easily one of my most anticipated films of the year. The film is a western (of sorts) that stars Academy Award winners Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz as a former slave and a German bounty hunter, who have teamed up to take down an evil plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Of course, this being a Tarantino film, expect plenty of other genre-defying antics to come up as well. Continue on to see the first official trailer and some pictures from the upcoming film. I enjoy my fair share of video games. I have also been incredibly busy for the last month. Still, I did manage to find time to play and finish Max Payne 3, the latest entry in Rockstar Games’ hybrid Noir-John Woo infused shooter series. It has been a long time since I was able to jump into the shoes of the rogue cop with a murdered family, grief to deal with, and unlimited ammo for his dual pistols, but I was happy that unlike the terrible 2008 film adaptation starring Mark Walhberg, this return to the Max Payne universe was well worth it. As of late, many games I tend to play in installments, with lots of gaps in between me picking up the controller again. Max Payne 3 fell into the category of games that I could not stop playing, which is a credit to its quality and reason enough for me to put in my two cents about it. Few filmmakers have been able to take a huge chunk of money, spend it on an epic adventure in filmmaking, riding through waves of bad publicity and production troubles, only to create a huge blockbuster success as a result. James Cameron has done it twice. Recently, he managed to shatter the record for biggest film of all time with Avatar, but the record shattered was that of his own previous film, Titanic. Titanic is a film that by all accounts should not have worked. A romantic/disaster drama with a huge budget, where everyone already knows the ending, and has no chance of being made into a franchise is not exactly the kind of film studios would want to get their hands on, but Cameron was able to do the impossible and have it succeed. Now the film has been re-released into theaters with a new 3D conversion, heavily supervised by Cameron, providing audiences with another chance to view the film on a big screen. My friend and fellow film critic Scott Mendelson has done a job of capturing all of my thoughts regarding Titanic’s legacy HERE, but having now seen this new release, I can still provide some of my own thoughts the conversion and the film, as it stands today. On Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Regent Showcase Theater in Hollywood, California, the Los Angeles Animation Festival presented a screening of the 1999 animated film, The Iron Giant, followed by a Q&A with director Brad Bird, actor Eli Marienthal (all grown up), and members of the crew. The screening was presented with an original 35mm print of the film, in a theater that was packed with fans. Those who know of the history of The Iron Giant remember that, despite high critical praise, the film did poorly in theaters, only to find a much larger audience on home video and DVD. Now the film has a strong cult following, which was certainly apparent due to the enthusiasm seen at this crowded charity screening of the film. Continue on to find a full recording of the Q&A that followed the screening of the film. Continue reading ‘Los Angeles Animation Festival: The Iron Giant’

The summers of 2010 and 2011 have provided me with two films that, on the surface, have very little in common with one another; however, after some careful consideration, I have found many intriguing similarities between the two. I am speaking of 2010’s Inception, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and 2011’s Midnight in Paris, written and directed by Woody Allen. These films are unlikely allies, because, in a broad sense, they are both very concerned with the concept of dreams. Both films contain a somewhat multi-layered approach to their concepts and story and were met with much success both critically and financially. It would seem audiences were on board for multifaceted thinking in the case of both a blockbuster film and a low key “art house” comedy. Regardless, I had a simple goal in mind, which I hope properly puts forth how I wanted to turn a single idea into an in-depth article concerning two films I greatly admire. [Major spoilers for both films, beyond this point] Continue reading ‘Midnight InCeption’

To me, 2011 was a pretty unusual year. I say that because I found there to be an unusual amount of great films that came out in both the realm of mainstream feature films and the realm of art house and independent features. This year, like any year, had its share of duds as well, but in looking back at the 120+ films I saw theatrically (yep), I can say that it was a pretty strong percentage of good to great films. So much so that the following list was practically too much for me to contain to a simple top ten, so I have listed a number of honorable and special mentions, as well as provided a few other odds & ends. Enjoy. (I left a ton of Easter Eggs linked within a lot of the pictures)

I am super busy these days, but there are a certain number of films that I could not pass up when it came to checking them out on Blu-ray, at my own leisure, in the comfort of my own home. The following list is set of films that I consider to be some of the best that the Blu-ray format has had to offer for this year. Much like last year, I stayed true to some rules; I have to have actually watched the movie on Blu-Ray and delved into the special features and most importantly, I did not put any film on the list that may also be on my “Top 10 Films of the year” list. This means excluding films like Rango and Attack the Block (which have fantastic Blu-rays). For the sake of keeping my list interesting, I followed these rules; so here we go: Continue reading ‘Aaron’s Top 10 Blu-rays of 2011’
