“Suck it, Julia Roberts!” this week’s wishlist entry is going out to Cate Blanchett. In honor of the actress picking up her second Academy Award on Sunday (first for the Best Actress category), I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s pick to one of my favorite roles of hers in a favorite film of mine. What is it? You know I don’t like to spoil that til after you click!

Welcome to another Thursday of my wish list picks. I’d like to quickly point out that I’m posting these in no sort of preferential or ranking order. I’m merely going off of what I’m feeling about discussing for the week. And of course, it’s a title I think should be put out on the format. I’m also trying to kind of vary my choices when it comes to genre and the like, because I could easily fill this with horror title after horror title. But I want some variety. I hope you’re enjoying this as much as I am. And as always, feel free to leave suggestion of titles you want and I may choose to discuss them in the near future! So, with all that “blah blah” off my chest, let’s hunker own down and get to this week’s pick. Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – February 20, 2014′

Thanks Jimmy Kimel? Those are not words I use often, but hey, the man (well technically his show) is responsible for releasing the debut trailer for the upcoming Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy. This obscure Marvel comic property is the biggest risk Marvel Studios has taken since basically Iron Man, when Marvel pretty much started making their own movies. ‘Guardians‘ may be a bit of a trickier feat to pull off, given the mixed amount of star power in this cast, the darkly comedic/quirky style of former Troma director James Gunn, and the very premise, which may not be as easy to stomach as Robert Downey Jr. building a metal suit in a grounded reality. All of that said, all of the ingredients in this film have me excited by said risk and the ambition involved. Now we have the first full trailer, which at least does a good job of teasing the tone of the film. We have several months to see the end results, but I am no less excited for this movie. Check out the trailer and some new images from the film by continuing on in this post.

This week’s entry of my wishlist is definitely inspired by tomorrow’s holiday. And the film is also one I enjoy a lot more than most. It’s got plenty of visible faults, but I don’t think the movie is as vile as some have made its reputation out to be. If anything, it may be one that is benefited by looking at it years removed with maybe more forgiving or understanding eyes. Today’s film bolsters the tremendous scores of 8% (Rotten Tomatoes), 4.6 (IMDB), 18 (Metacritic), made 9 million shy of its low budget at the box office and doesn’t even show up on the pull down when you type it in on the IMDB search bar.

I generally save the trailer posts for more high profile films, but Under The Skin seems very intriguing to me. The film first caught my attention during its run at various film festivals last year, where I kept hearing about the film and its lead performance from Scarlett Johansson. Some comparisons to Kubrick were being made with this latest film from Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth), which is a bit strong, but certainly gets my attention. Regardless, there is now a new trailer and poster available to view and it continues to make me excited to see the film. Continue on to view the trailer.

It was a bit humorous that the party celebrating the upcoming release of the FX series, The Americans, was occurring on the same day as the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. For those unfamiliar, The Americans is a series revolving around undercover Russian spies in 1980s Washington D.C. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star as a seemingly normal, suburban couple, who are actually lethal KGB agents. The first season revolves around these two working together to continue their mission, while staying hidden as spies in plain sight. It also takes a lot of time to expand on the lives these two have shared, making the audience root for these two to keep this fake, but not necessarily non-emotional, marriage alive. I very much enjoyed the first season and was happy to enjoy the festivities celebrating the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release. This post details the event as well as the conversation I was a part of, with the producers of the series, who were very happy to talk about it.

Back in November I put together an article I had been eager to write for many months since joining Why So Blu. I patiently waited as I didn’t want to “just do it” for the sake of doing it. I wanted it to be at a key time and be relevant. That article was my ‘14 Blu-rays For 2014’ wishlist article (HERE). It was a blast to do and garnered plenty of discussion. I immediately wanted to write another. But that would kind of kill the luster and importance of the first piece. Also it could look like I’m subjecting myself to attention-starving and hit-baiting constantly doing lists. So, I decided that list would be the pilot and I’m now taking it to series. I’m going to do my best and make this a weekly series (popping up on Thursdays), picking 1 title every week that I would love to see released on our wonderful Blu-ray format. Since this is a series now and will be ongoing, I’m also going to make the case for some titles that need merely a Region A release so I can have more possibilities. I hope you enjoy my picks and come back each week to see what else isn’t on Blu-ray yet that should be! Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist: 1st Week Of February 2014′

I was seeing a lot of lists regarding people’s most anticipated films of the year and I figured I would post one too. Many directors, writers, and actors that I admire have films hitting theaters this year, so it was nice to dig into the upcoming release schedule of this year and really figure out what I am looking forward to. The problem then became how to rank these films. Given that I just struggled to put together a top ten list for 2013, I figured I would take a different approach with this list. The following is a list of films I am looking forward to, separated out by month, with mentions of a few other films as well. One must also keep in mind that I am going mostly by mainstream films with established release dates (that could potentially change). With all of that out of the way, here we go:

What an interesting year we had as it presented us with plenty of ammo at both ends of the quality spectrum. We had the horridness known as Machete Kills, as well as the brilliance of films such as J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel. It was also another year of super heroes. Some arrived from the pages of Marvel hoping to smash evil, while others came with a glove and a jersey hoping to smash barriers. Before we hit the rest of the list though, it is important to note there are a few significant films that escaped my grasp in 2013. For starters, I was not able to see The Wolf of Wall Street, Fruitvale Station, Anchorman 2 or Her. I’m sure Wolf would make a strong case for being on my list, so that one was a bummer not to catch in time. Her, while it doesn’t look like my cup of tea, does have Joaquin Phoenix who is pretty incredible in front of the camera. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in a week. So without further ado and endless jibber jabber, I present to you my top 10 favorite films of 2013.

It was a big year, but somehow I managed to put together a list of my favorite films of 2013. I have to say that this was once again not the easiest list to put together. Theatrically, I have seen 150+ films this year, so there were a lot of films to consider and figure out how to reference in terms of their placement on this list. Some of these films certainly got a bigger response out of me than others, but at the same time, some stuck with me throughout the year and wound up turning into films I enjoyed even more than after my initial viewing. As a result, the only course of action was to do my best to give praise to not just the films in my top ten, but the other films of this year that I really enjoyed, by being sure to have honorable and special mentions for all the films that were in contention or worth mentioning. Still, I am very satisfied by this final list that I have put together, mainly because it is my list and it contains films that I really enjoyed the most this year, for various reasons. So here we go (by the way, lots of Easter Eggs hidden in the pictures).
