A Talk With the Directors of Tangled

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure to talk with the directors of Tangled, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and was graciously given a chance to ask them some questions thanks to the fine folks that handle publicity for Disney. It was great to be able to talk to both of them about the movie and also about the upcoming Blu-ray which I had already fortunately reviewed before our talk. Treme is a show created by David Simon (The Wire) and it takes place in New Orleans three months after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. This dramatic show has a lot to say about life in New Orleans and shows the anger and desperation of the people who are still struggling to survive there. The show focuses on the lives of regular people trying to rebuild their lives, their businesses, and their homes after the costliest natural disaster to ever hit the United States. 
Tangled marks Walt Disney’s 50th animated feature film and it’s a fitting choice since it seems to bridge the company’s legendary legacy of traditional animation with the new focus on computer animation. Although the film is entirely CGI, Disney has perfected it so well that it’s taken what worked traditionally and integrated it into computer animation seamlessly. 
One of the most popular and successful British drama series in television history, Upstairs, Downstairs: Series One tells the story of the aristocratic Bellamy’s and the servants that support them. Upstairs, Downstairs is the winner of seven Emmy Awards, two BAFTAs, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award. 
Serving as a warmup and placeholder for the upcoming Avengers movie, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is coming to DVD on April 26, 2011. This action-packed superhero series features Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Ant-Man, Wasp, and The Hulk. There’s also appearances from the Fantastic Four and some of the other heroes and villains from the Marvel Universe. 
On March 29th, MGM Home Entertainment will release eight MGM classics on Blu-ray for the first time ever!! Titles include All Dogs Go To Heaven, All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, Material Girls, Picture This, The Secret of NIMH, Teen Wolf, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and Legally Blonde 2. 
Have you ever wondered where your family came from? Or whether or not there were any scoundrels or perhaps royalty in your bloodline? I know I have and that’s why I wanted to review this. The shows format is simple: get some famous people and have some genealogists help them track down their historical relatives. For this first season the stars are: Lisa Kudrow, Brooke Shields, Emmitt Smith, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Spike Lee, and Susan Sarandon. 
My all time favorite mini-series is Band of Brothers hands down. So when I heard that Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were gearing up to make The Pacific, I was ecstatic. While Band of Brothers took place in the European Theater, The Pacific focuses on our war with Japan and the brutal fighting done island by island on the way to Japan. When the series was finally released, I signed up for a trial period with HBO just to watch it. 
For those of you that aren’t aware of the show, How The Earth Was Made is a documentary series that premiered in 2007 on The History Channel that focuses on different geologic events and how those events have shaped the Earth through the use of computer generated graphics, on location shooting, and a group of experts whose expertise in geology and volcanology helps explain what we are seeing. 
Thomas Jefferson is one of our nation’s most important and least understood Presidents despite being the most researched and quoted of all of them. He was a man of many contradictions and this DVD attempts to provide the viewers of an overview of Jefferson’s life and offers a closer look at his inconsistent nature. 
It will be a day long remembered! The Star Wars Saga will be back in theaters next February in 3D starting with Episode I – The Phantom Menace and followed by the rest of the legendary series! I know some people will inevitably complain that it will be in 3D but the conversion is being supervised by ILM and George Lucas personally and it will look fantastic I’m sure. Besides, does it really matter? This is the Star Wars movies back on the big screen where they belong!
If you like shows about insanely dangerous jobs like The Deadliest Catch, then you are sure to love Ice Road Truckers. As they say at the start of each show, “At the top of the world, there’s a job only a few would dare.” Those few include the drivers from the Carlile trucking company who are now driving to even more remote and dangerous locations than before. 
On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes Mountains with forty-five passengers aboard. Due to pilot error, their flight plan and position was incorrect which led search patrol to look for survivors in the wrong area and eventually to abandon the plane and passengers as lost. Left to survive on their own, the ill-equipped survivors had to survive in one of the most desolate places in the world and make choices that no human being should ever be forced to make in order to survive.
The movie that made Star Wars possible and kicked off a wave of nostalgia across the nation, is finally coming to Blu-ray this May! American Graffiti was so successful that it gave George Lucas the chance to make Star Wars and launched the careers of a talented group of young actors that includes: Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Paul LeMat, Charles Martin-Smith, Candy Clark, and the already well known Ron Howard who made the transition from television to movies with this film.
Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck paved the way for other culturally focused comedies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the story revolves around a large family who loves, fights, and eats together. In this case, the movie is about the Castorini family, an Italian brood that sticks together despite some problems which include infidelity, curses, and more. 
Gulliver’s Travels has a great cast with Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, and Amanda Peet who star in this classic tale of a regular guy who travel to the land called Lilliput where he is a giant among them. This version seems to be very family friendly and I’ve read that they created a new process of filming in 3D so I’m curious to see how it turned out. 
Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris is one of the most controversial yet celebrated movies in film history. In fact, when it was released it was with an “X” rating and was protested by many women’s groups. The press either seemed to love it or hate it. Some like Pauline Kael said that, “Tango has altered the face of an art form,” while others like William F. Buckley described it as “Pornography disguised as art.”
