When the Jonah Hex movie was announced I was really looking forward to it. I love westerns, it had a good cast, and I enjoyed the character in earlier DC Comics shows such as Batman – The Animated Series, Justice League – Unlimited and Batman – The Brave and the Bold. Hex was never popular enough to have his own show, but he did have several long running comic series which were popular. Continue reading ‘Jonah Hex (DVD Review)’

Troll 2 is a breathtaking study about the rights and grandeur of a small group of indigenous people and their struggle to survive. This profound movie is a serious look at the human condition and how individuals can triumph despite the societal norms and pressures placed on them. Superbly directed by film auteur Claudio Fargrasso (under the pseudonym of Drake Floyd to remain humble), and ably supported by hand-picked actors whose haunting and nuanced portrayals bring the characters to life, Troll 2 is a cinematic treasure that dazzles us with its wit and charm. One of my favorite actors is Mel Gibson, who despite his personal demons is one of the best actors to come along in the last thirty years. Able to convey both masculinity and sensitivity, he’s a rare actor that can work in any genre as shown by his long and illustrious career. That career was started by Mad Max a $400,000 Australian independent film that ended up becoming a huge hit and the start of a new franchise. Continue reading ‘Mad Max (Blu-ray Review)’

The sequel to the last remake of Death Race will arrive this January! If you enjoy hardcore vehicular mayhem you will enjoy this series. While none of the stars of the last movie will appear in this one, it does boast some notable names such as Sean Bean, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhams, and Luke Goss. The last one was a lot better than I thought it would be and it was a fun way to see weaponized cars destroy everything in their path. Continue reading ‘Death Race 2 Speeds Onto Blu-ray Jan. 18th!’

I was fortunate enough to participate in two separate round-table interviews with the legendary Disney animator Glen Keane who has played a central role in bringing many Disney movies to life including The Little Mermaid and especially Beauty and the Beast, where he was the lead animator for the character of the Beast. Mr. Keane is as modest and friendly as he is talented and he generously spent more time than was originally allotted to answer our questions. The second season of the fantasy show is based on Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series which ended the shows run. The show was produced by Renaissance Pictures the production company owned by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, who had previously produced other fantasy shows such as Hercules – The Legendary Journeys, Xena – The Warrior Princess, and one of my guilty favorites – Jack of all Trades. I liked all of those shows but they were also capable of making some terrible ones like Cleopatra 2525, so I wasn’t sure how this show would turn out. One of the biggest movies in Disney history, Beauty and the Beast has finally been released to Blu-ray as a new Diamond Edition release! With its incredible blend of traditional animation with computer generated images, Beauty and the Beast was the only animated movie to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture until the Disney/Pixar release of Up eighteen years later. This is without a doubt the funniest show on TV right now. Usually when a show this good is on TV that means that no one is watching it and it’s going to be canceled like Arrested Development. The good news is that that’s not the case this time as not only is the show doing well in the ratings but it’s also winning Emmys. Show-runners Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd who last produced the underrated Back To You, have rebounded from that cancellation with this expertly cast comedy. It’s a show that the entire family can and should enjoy together! Continue reading ‘Modern Family Season One (Blu-ray Review)’

“Since the dawn of the horror genre, filmmakers have consistently come up with inventive ways to chop up an endless string of damsels in distress. They could’ve just left these film deaths to the imagination, but where’s the fun in that? From knives to piano wire, these weapons are some of the bloodiest.” I thought the following article, sent by us from our friends over at SPIKE TV, is the perfect way for us to kick off and celebrate my favorite upcoming holiday of the year, Halloween! So sit back, relax and learn about all the tools of the trade. Enjoy this one! Continue reading ‘The “Top 10” Greatest Horror Movie Weapons’

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke
At last, we sadly come to the end. Third acts in movie franchises have historically been weaker than the movies that preceded them. There are rare exceptions to that but if you think about movies like The Godfather Part III or even Return of the Jedi (which I love), they just aren’t as good as the movies before them. The Return of the King is just as good as the previous two and in some ways even better. Continue reading ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King Theatrical (Blu-ray Review)’

After the critical and commercial success of The Fellowship of the Ring, the expectations were higher for The Two Towers. For Peter Jackson and crew, The Two Towers was the hardest movie to make out of the three because when their script was changed from two movies (as originally intended) to three, some major changes were made. The beginning of the film was actually supposed to be the conclusion of The Fellowship of the Ring and they changed to ending so that the Battle at Helm’s Deep would be the climax. The greatest and most ambitious series of fantasy movies has finally come to Blu-ray! The Lord of the Rings trilogy represents one of the biggest gambles in modern film history as all three films were filmed at once with a director who was better known for small horror movies, not to mention the fact that fantasy films generally aren’t successful at the box office. While she is better known as an actress nowadays, Janeane Garofalo has been doing stand up for decades now. She won the title of being the “Funniest Person in Rhode Island,” after entering into a talent contest by Showtime and went on to continue doing stand up during the 80s but never really hit the big time until the 90s (a fact she mentions during the concert). In 1992, she was added to a ground-breaking new show called The Ben Stiller Show where she joined a talented cast that included Ben Stiller, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, and Andy Dick. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is one of those movies that has production stories just as interesting as the movie itself. Before the book was published, actor Kirk Douglas read it and bought the rights to the book and turned into a play that he took to Broadway. Despite good reviews and a great cast, the play closed after six months and Douglas went about trying to make a movie out of it. While traveling Europe, he ran into director Milos Forman and told him that he would send him a copy of the book to see if he would be interested in directing the movie. I was very happy to get this movie to review as I had missed it in the theaters and I was excited to see what Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney could do after their last swashbuckling effort resulted in the Pirates of the Caribbean series which I loved. You see, I have a serious weakness for these types of films as I love the old Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks movies and nobody seems to make those kind of films anymore. I’m hoping with the success of the Pirates trilogy, the National Treasure series, and now this, that the studios will start making adventure films again. The most anticipated movie in our household (especially by my son) is finally coming November 2! Not only is Toy Story 3 getting the Blu-ray treatment, it’s also getting a deluxe box set that contains the entire trilogy and all of their special features in a replica of Andy’s wagon train toy box. Toy Story 3 dominated the box office this summer (over 1 billion dollars!) and is currently ranked as the 5th biggest worldwide movie of all time. Continue reading ‘Toy Round Up!
