It never fails. Every time I leave the Austin, TX area it’s either nice weather then or something really cool happens. Since I’m in California this week, the latter is happening! My independent filmmaker heroes Adam Green and Joe Lynch are coming to town and I won’t be there to see it. Dammit! The Geeknation’s “Movie Crypt” hosts will be making a special appearance this Wednesday evening at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar for a double feature screening of Digging Up The Marrow and Everly plus more! Read on below to find out all the pertinent details! Continue reading ‘Digging Up The Marrow & Everly Double Header at the Alamo Drafthouse’

I first met Tim Sullivan years ago at the mighty Comic-Con. That interview can be found here. Over the years the horror legend and I have kept in touch and I’m even involved in an upcoming project of his, but we’re not here to talk about that today…just yet. We’re here about something both old and new Tim Sullivan has been cooking as of late. So here it is. Director Tim Sullivan has been joined by horror icon Tom Holland in a great new venture called…drum roll please…TnT Presents. Offering enhanced editions of their memorable films, Holland and Sullivan will continue to celebrate the launch of TnT Presents with a signing party at a place I love very much, Dark Delicacies, this month, January 10th from 2pm to 4pm (that’s Pacific time). Check out the official press release below and learn how you can also score an autographed Chucky doll! I was not planning on putting out a full article on this, but a press release does make things a lot easier, so here it is: This morning, Marvel unveiled a heap of announcements regarding their upcoming films for Phase 3 of their cinematic universe. Lots of reasons for comic book and superhero movie fans to get excited, as this list of films is composed of exciting sequels, new film properties, and a chance to see some exciting comic book storylines come to life. Personally I am most excited for Black Panther (with a wonderful casting choice of Chadwick Boseman no less), but I cannot deny how epic Thor: Ragnarok is for a title of a movie, regardless of its quality. That in mind, to get a list of the films, some concept artwork, and more, continue on with this post. Updated with Images from the event and a Q&A video with Kevin Feige.

New York Comic Con 2014 certainly went out with a bang, as Day 4 brought more surprises and gossip-filled panels for all the fans in attendance on Sunday. Once again it was the television panels that generated the most interest, with new Batman-origins show Gotham taking the top spot. The cast and crew were on-hand to answer questions and talk about their experiences on the show so far. Gotham fans were also treated to a special sneak peak of scenes from upcoming episodes. Day 3 at New York Comic Con was dominated by television and unsurprisingly the biggest buzz of the day went to The Walking Dead. Season 5 of the smash hit zombie-filled drama premieres tonight on AMC and yesterday’s panel gave fans a look at the first 4 minutes of the last night’s episode. Cast and crew were also on hand to answer questions on how the show will be developing this season, helping The Walking Dead generate 18,256 mentions and 4,664 Intent-to-View mentions. However, The Walking Dead had tough competition for the Day 3 top spot from Marvel’s latest TV show Daredevil, which will be premiering exclusively on Netflix soon. The series, which stars Boardwalk Empire favourite Charlie Cox in the title role, held a panel where cast and crew presented the first footage from the series, as well as promotional posters and pictures. The Netflix series generated 17,762 mentions and 2,111 ITV mentions during the course of NYCC Day 3. Continue reading ‘New York Comic Con: Day 3 Social Wrap Up’

Friday was Marvel Day at NYCC, with the studio dropping several surprises on fans during the course of the day! The biggest news of the day from Marvel was the announcement that this summer’s biggest blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy would be getting an animated series for the Disney XD channel. The announcement generated a mighty 6,544 mentions. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D panel also generated a significant amount of buzz, as cast and crew revealed secrets from season 2 of the show and fans also got their first look at the highly anticipated Agent Carter series. All this, as well as other Marvel comics panels, helped Marvel generate a super 29,471 mentions on Friday alone, making it our superhero of the day! Day 1 of New York Comic Con started with a bang, as Walt Disney Studios brought the biggest surprise of the day in the form of newly married George Clooney’s appearance at the Tomorrowland panel. Clooney’s appearance was a big buzz winner for the film, as the actor alone generated 11,496 mentions and no doubt helped to ensure Tomorrowland was the most buzzed about property of the day. Tomorrowland’s first teaser trailer also debuted at the panel and was soon available online for audiences outside of New York to enjoy. The film enjoyed the largest Intent-to-View conversation with 4,459 mentions. Disney’s other panel for Marvel animation Big Hero Six was also a big winner with 13,521 mentions and 4,155 ITV mentions. One certainly cannot accuse the V/H/S series of not wanting to evolve. Each film serves as a horror anthology based around the idea of genre directors using the ‘found footage’ to put together some extremely messed up films, but this series has also attempted to grow its mythology and find new and wilder approaches to the short films. The first V/H/S was marred by its long runtime and general nastiness as far as a majority of the characters, both protagonists and antagonists were concerned. V/H/S 2 was a major step up, as it was shorter, scary, well-produced, and still very extreme. Now we have this third feature which is a bit of mixed bag. On the one hand, it is very well-produced and shows a lot of creativity. On the other, a large focus on the connective tissue between the individual films really brings things down, along with the very evolution of the central conceit, which may be controversial to ‘found footage purists.’

I find there to be a lot of beauty in Los Angeles at night. It is a bit odd, as I find most films that portray LA primarily at night tend to be centered on crime. Something about the way this city is illuminated by its street lights, cars, and various other forms of activity just does something for me. Certain films and filmmakers have proven to have quite the handle on filming this sort of thing. I think of a director like Michael Mann, who seems to understand exactly how to shoot LA at night, given what he brought to films like Heat or Collateral. With Nightcrawler, a dark, satirical neo-noir, writer/director Dan Gilroy and cinematographer Robert Elswit seemed to want to do all they could to capture amazing photography of this city at night. As a result, we watch a slimy character do all he can to get great footage, while in turn finding something sublime in how wonderfully shot the whole thing is.

So there are plenty of ways I could go over the various panels I saw throughout my time at Comic Con. I have done so in a number of articles already, but all of this work certainly takes a lot of work. So, with that said, rather than recap the same panels in written form, which have been covered on the day and read by thousands already, I figured I would publish a couple podcast episodes featuring myself and friend/fellow movie lover/Comic Con veteran Alan Aguilera. The two of us took the time, during Comic Con, to go over our experiences from Wednesday through Saturday. These were recorded on Friday and Sunday mornings, with part 2 being a good example of how exhausted we were, after seeing so much. Continue on to listen to a couple bonus episodes from Out Now with Aaron and Abe (the podcast I co-host), which features discussions of Marvel, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Legendary Pictures, Sony Pictures, Sin City, Batman the TV Show, 24, Sleepy Hollow, Comedy Central, Adult Swim, and many other panel presentations, along with various stories, showroom floor experiences, and the craziness that was the Hall H line this year.

Our hard-working reviewer out in the field, Aaron Neuwirth, braved the 12-hour wait last night to get into Hall H for the Comic-Con 2014 panels today so he will be having a full thorough write-up later on, but for right now I want you to feast your eyes on the woman of the hour. Revealed a little more than an hour ago out there in beautiful San Diego, Zack Snyder teased an image of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I was able to grab a full resolution image of the still leaked at Comic-Con this morning for you all to enjoy down below. Check back later for full coverage of this exciting Hall H event courtesy of Aaron! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2014: First Photo of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman’

I have next to nothing to post, in regards to what happened in Hall H with Paramount, as I was not there. That said, we do have a very basic recap of what happened, provided by Paramount, including a trailer and some images. I wish this could be more all encompassing, but here we are: Thursday in San Diego Comic Con’s Hall H, Paramount shared exciting news about its upcoming films SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, PROJECT ALMANAC, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2, HERCULES, and INTERSTELLAR. Continue on to learn more.

Either Sony Pictures just could not get enough films together for panels this year or they are still recouping from the expenditures from Spider-Man’s appearance at last year’s Comic Con, but regardless, this was a pretty stripped down affair for a studio that currently has a couple square blocks devoted to a number of their upcoming features (Fury, The Equalizer, The Interview). That said, while one of the two films presented had little to offer audiences, the other managed to have me more excited than I thought I would be. So let’s dive in to this limited panel from one of the major studios appearing at this year’s Comic Con.

I was happy to sit in on the Comedy Central panel at Comic Con and following a hilarious panel for the hit sketch show Key & Peele (I reviewed the Blu-ray for the first two seasons HERE), a special look at a new animated series took place. Here’s the official word: Today at San Diego Comic-Con Comedy Central unveiled the first look at “Moonbeam City,” the brand’s newest animated series debuting in 2015. “Moonbeam City” is an absurdist take on the gritty, sex-drenched crime dramas from the 1980s and follows undercover detective Dazzle Novak (voiced by Rob Lowe), a handsome idiot who commits more crimes than most criminals. The show also stars his tyrannical chief, Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks), who won’t get off his back and hotshot rookie Rad Cunningham (Will Forte) who is dying to see him fail. With the world against him, Dazzle is thrust into a living nightmare: having to do actual police work. “Moonbeam City” is executive produced by Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment in association with Titmouse Studios. Comedy Central’s panel at Comic-Con today featured the series’ Executive Producers Scott Gairdner and Tommy Blancha. Continue on to see a clip and some pictures from the show.

There are a lot of things to see at San Diego Comic Con every year and while I am certainly excited to see a number of the high profile panels taking place this year, I am not overstating it when I say that a Hall H panel focused on the 60s Batman television series definitely had my attention. After years of waiting, the entire series is finally going to be released onto Blu-ray and DVD this November and apparently Comic Con was the place to reveal the details of the upcoming set. Not at all hurting was the presence of Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar, who were game to share some stories, while audiences were also treated to clips from the newly remastered episodes.
