You can both love her and embrace everything about her or you can hate her and pretend you are one of the cool kids. Whatever you side is, there’s no denying that leading lady of pop is back. I’m talking about Lady Gaga of course. I thought long and hard before writing this review. Should I or shouldn’t I? Life is too short to waste on things that truly do not matter so in the case of Gaga’s newest album, Born This Way, I let it slowly digest for the past week before deciding whether or not it was truly worthy of investing time in and writing about. In other words, the verdict is in. I’m a fan of Gaga’s newest album. However, I always hate it when people give me such a simple answer. It irks me to no end. The word okay also does that too. What does okay even mean? It’s like maybe. It means nothing. Continue reading ‘Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (CD Review)’

To commemorate the one year anniversary of legendary frontman Ronny James Dio’s death Why So Blu has gone ahead and prioritized this Blu-ray review of Heaven & Hell: Live Radio City Music Hall to be be posted as soon as possible. When Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath back in the late 70’s the remaining members re-formed as Black Sabbath with Ronny James Dio as the new lead singer. Heaven & Hell was their first album together and nearly thirty years later they would tour under the name Heaven & Hell. This is a review of their 2007 concert in New York at Radio City Music Hall. Please take note that this will not be one of those reviews where we start picking sides on which line up was the best. Regardless of who you prefer let’s all agree that Dio was an awesome singer and musician. Continue reading ‘Heaven & Hell: Live Radio City Music Hall (Blu-ray Review)’

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. That is how the classic novel “A Tale of Two Cities” begins. It’s also an accurate description of the most recent Lady Gaga concert I attended. This past Wednesday was the final U.S. concert in Lady Gaga’s acclaimed Monster Ball Tour. Last year, I was also in attendance when she came to town though my seat was on the opposite end of the arena. This time, I was 15 feet from the stage. How was this latest delivery?

Alright. Here’s the conundrum I face. Do I or don’t I? When it comes to discovering new talent I tend to believe whatever I like will go on to become the newest fad. Who doesn’t like to think that way? Sometimes it’s a blessing and sometimes it’s a curse in disguise. My wife thinks I’m full of it, but what does she know. I aksed my fellow writer Gerard Iribe today if he would mind if I did a very short piece on my latest musical find. He said sure…go for it. I know, right out of the gate, I will be blasted with Burlesque-like insults, but quite frankly, I don’t bleeping care. Like my leading lady within this piece shows us, “This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like.” Continue reading ‘Porcelain Black Shows Us What Rock N Roll Looks Like’

I’m always up for new discoveries when it comes to music and musicians. Being a hard rock aficionado and guitar geek, why is it that I had never heard of Rory Gallagher? In fact the whole staff at Why So Blu hadn’t heard of him. I decided to go ahead and venture into unexplored territory with the Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 Blu-ray. In a sense you really can’t go wrong when some of the greatest living guitar legends of all time like Slash, Brian May, Glenn Tipton, and The Edge, cite Gallagher as a major influence in their playing of the guitar. That’s all I needed to know before I dove into the Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 (Blu-ray Review)’

There are so many variables that need to come together for a band to arrive at some plain of cohesion while achieving a high level of musicality. This is where many acts falter, some even stumbling out of the gate. Then again, there are those few that persist with a fiery determination to make it work while they continue to hurdle obstacles that are commonplace in their business. Jackie is one of these diamonds in the rough. In a league where clones and studio masking are all too common, Jackie casts those weights aside to show what originality and talent sound like.

You know you’re getting old when you can remember where you were ten years ago. Me, I was at the grand opening of the House of Blues in Anaheim in Downtown Disney. Why was I there? Lit was there. Lit were opening up the venue with two sold out shows Friday and Saturday night. If memory serves me correctly. I was there and so was my entourage. It was a great double header and kicked off what would be one of the more popular and intimate venues for live music in Orange County. Fast forward this to the 10th Anniversary, and here we are. As of a few weeks ago, I had no intention of writing this article, simply because I had no material worthy of this honor. The top 40 on the radio usually consists of “in the moment” tunes that may be decent, but come from albums that lack a solid performance from the first track to the last. From where I stood, it was an anemic year for music. Linkin Park brought us something new, but not necessarily something exciting. The Black Eyed Peas’ latest work didn’t exactly send people to the moon either. Another example is the band Daughtry, of whom I’m a fan. Their collaboration with Carlos Santana covering Def Lepperd’s “Photograph” was uninspiring to say the least. What’s that mean when even bands you like aren’t measuring up? It means quality is going to hit you when you least expect it. Continue reading ‘Gregg’s 2010 Album of the Year’

Back in August 2010, I was able to write about my journey to Chicago, where I experienced the musical awesomeness that was Lollapalooza 2010. Despite my inability to critically assess music beyond thinking that some bands sound good in my ear and some do not, I have decided to once again write about a fantastic musical extravaganza. This time, I was able to attend the 21st Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas. Continue reading ‘The 21st Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas (Night 2)’

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. Lennon loved New York City and proclaimed it to be his new home but his vocal and effective anti-war stance quickly brought the full force of the U.S. Government down upon him. This is a look into the life and times of John Lennon who while trying to discover what kind of life he wanted also had to fight from being deported from America for being who he was. There may not have been any headless pigeons, but the evening was graced by the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness nonetheless. Ozzy Osbourne and company paid a visit to rock ‘n roll capital Cleveland, Ohio the night of December 5th. Despite high winds and the threat of an impending snow storm, Ozzy faithfuls still made the trek through inclement weather to the Q Arena for a night of energy infused metal. But before Ozzy would take the stage, an opening act would have the north coast audience to itself. Continue reading ‘Ozzy Let’s the Concert Madness Begin’

Their music is known throughout the world, been at the top of the Billboard charts, heard in Disney theme parks, and played an integral part in the success of many beloved movies as well. Robert and Richard Sherman, professionally known as The Sherman Brothers, have arguably contributed more to the success of the Walt Disney empire than anyone else through their wonderful songs. For longer than I can remember, my senses have been bombarded by the annual holiday season advertisements and catchy seasonal tunes. One constant amidst this barrage of Christmas time cheer is the yearly return of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Before this past weekend, I had yet to add a TSO show to my concert-going repertoire. That all changed on the afternoon of November 28th as the lights went down at Quicken Loans Arena (affectionately known as ‘The Q’) and the multi-faceted production took the stage. Would this holiday-themed concert live up to its hype or fall short of expectations? Continue reading ‘Trans-Siberian Orchestra: Boredom or Bedazzler?’

One of Walt Disney’s biggest gambles has to be the much beloved Fantasia. At the time, Disney wanted to bring Mickey Mouse back in a big way as a comeback vehicle where the animation would be combined with classical music selections to tell a collection of different stories. Disney spared no expense to achieve the desired focus on quality and detail and even Mickey Mouse was redesigned to have a more modern and realistic look.
