“A stellar cast” (Jeffrey Lyons, Lyons Den Radio), including Oscar®winner Kevin Costner*, Oscar® nominee Hailee Steinfeld** and Amber Heard, lead this “undeniably entertaining” (Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter) action-thriller. Costner plays a daring International spy with lethal skills and a hard-earned reputation for tackling the most dangerous missions imaginable. But when a seductive CIA operative (Heard) makes him an offer he can’t refuse, he’s forced to juggle his two toughest assignments yet: looking after his rebellious teenage daughter (Steinfeld), while hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist. While some of us at Why So Blu are concerned whether or not MMA fighter Gina Carano can be considered an actress (I personally felt she was fine in Haywire), she has another starring role to prove herself in with In The Blood. Here are some official words about it: Gina Carano stars as Ava, a trained fighter with a dark past. When her new husband (Cam Gigandet) vanishes during their Caribbean honeymoon, Ava uncovers a violent underworld of conspiracy in the middle of an island paradise. Armed with a deadly set of skills, Ava sets out to discover the truth – and to take down the men she thinks are responsible for his abduction, one by one. This will likely be action packed and arrives on Blu-ray for all to find out on June 3rd. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

A deadly virus turns the good citizens of Amsterdam into the bloodthirsty undead in the horror-comedy KILL ZOMBIE!, debuting on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital June 10th from Well Go USA Entertainment. After spending the night locked safely away in the local jail, two brothers and two criminals emerge to find their hometown devastated and ground zero for the zombie apocalypse. Joining forces with a lithe and beautiful officer, they embark on a reluctant rescue mission using everything at their disposal – mallets, crossbows, bowling balls, shotguns and heavy artillery. “Writer Tijs van Marle and Directors Marijn Smits and Erwin Ven Den Eshof create a Zom-Com which uses charmingly outdated wit to its advantage. With an entertaining kill count and arsenal that makes Shaun of the Dead look like My Little Pony,Kill Zombie! is a truly entertaining piece worthy of your time.” (Boxofficebuz.com)

Grand Piano, the Fantastic Fest darling and hit Video OnDemand horror film starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack is on its way to Blu-ray next month courtesy of Magnolia Home Entertainment. Horror (though this is listed as “Thriller”) and VOD have started becoming really good friends and turning out some great product, be it a VOD debut or a festival film’s avenue to a wider release. I was actually planning on finally getting to this one this weekend, but it looks like I’ll just put it on hold a little longer until it comes for review. It arrives on May 20th and you can start pre-ordering it by clicking the Amazon link below (help your fellow Why So Blu reviewers!). Also, below are some of the details regarding the release from Magnolia. Continue reading ‘Sing Us The Song, You’re The GRAND PIANO Man, Sing Us A Song May 20th (On Blu-ray)!’

Those keeping up with the news may have heard today that David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, Zodiac) will likely not be directing a Steve Jobs biopic, scripted by Aaron Sorkin. Given my love for their previous collaboration, The Social Network, that is unfortunate news, but with that said, the day was also met with a trailer for Fincher’s upcoming 2014 film, Gone Girl, based on the bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn. After The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it seems that Fincher is fine with adapting popular pulp novels found in grocery stores, but I am not one to complain, if he at least continues to make these films entertaining via his visual and directorial style and stocked with a great cast. This film features Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Kim Dickens, Scoot McNairy, Patrick Fugit, and of course, Tyler Perry. The film looks like a fun pulpy ride to me, check it out for yourself in this post.

You’re going to have to forgive me. I’m a little late to this party here. I had every intention of posting this video when it was released yesterday, but I never got around to it. It’s not that I didn’t want to or that I was procrastinating, but maybe like a lot of you, the death of Kurt Cobain had a very profound impact on my life. And quite honestly, that’s hard to admit sometimes. As soon as you utter the name Kurt Cobain to an elder and profess your mad affinity for the man you kind of instantly get mislabeled as a druggie or a degenerate, sort of the bad rap he received himself. So I would think it’s odd to hear praise of the man’s career coming from someone like me who has sworn off drugs his entire life, not even touching a cigarette once, to say my love for the man and his art knows no boundaries, even in his death. And that’s truly where our story begins. Continue reading ‘‘Soaked in Bleach’ Drenches You In The Mystery of Kurt Cobain’s Death’

The who knocks returns. One of my favorite television series of all time is coming home to Blu-ray in full this June. This may sound confusing to those who are already aware of the elaborate box set placed inside a container shaped like one of the barrels seen so often throughout Breaking Bad, but if I had to guess, this new box set is likely something a bit more compact and easy to fit on a Blu-ray shelf. Regardless, Breaking Bad is a fantastic series and if you haven’t seen it, this would probably be a good time to check it out. There is no official artwork yet, but continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

Olive Films releases two classic films that honor the military just in time for Memorial Day,Flying Tigers and Home of the Brave (1949), on Blu-ray™ and DVD May 13th. Flying Tigers (1942) stars John Wayne in a story set just prior to the invasion of Pearl Harbor and contains some of the most nail-biting aerial combat sequences ever shot. Home of the Brave is a more hard-hitting personal story of an African American solider and the discrimination he faces during his service in WWII. Newly remastered in HD for the first time, these films have never looked better. Continue reading ‘Commemorate Memorial Day With Two Wartime Classics From Olive Films’

As stated in the previous post, the 15th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival is coming soon (opening night is April 24th) and there will be many films and festivities I plan to see and be a part of. This post contains the official press release concerning the closing night film, which I am very excited about. Chef is a return for Jon Favreau to his low-budget roots and after just seeing the trailer, which features a strong cast and what looks to be cinematography based around food that will have everyone salivating throughout, I am super excited to be able to catch it. Check out the rest of this post to read the official press release regarding this closing night film and I have also embedded the trailer for Chef.

So it begins. For the past few years I have been covering the annual Newport Beach Film Festival and the time is upon us for me to get really busy covering it again. Staring April 24th, I will be doing my part to attend the festival, which includes hitting up parties (poor me), putting some eyes on the red carpet now and again, maybe talking with some stars and filmmakers, but most importantly – seeing a lot of movies (many in the same day) and providing reviews for everything I get to see. Last year I took a different approach, which proved to be much more efficient, so I plan to continue that this year and hopefully see even more films. While the festival does not start for another couple of weeks, this post and the next post concern the announcement of the opening and closing films for the 15th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival. Continue on to find out more.

Before we get to the official words by Sony, I just want to say that I really enjoyed this film (Review HERE), so I look forward to more people checking it out, once it is release. Anyway: Kevin Hart (Think Like A Man, Ride Along), Michael Ealy (Last Vegas, Think Like a Man), Regina Hall (The Best Man Holiday, Think Like A Man) and Joy Bryant (TV’s “Parenthood) form an all-star cast in the sexy, romantic comedy ABOUT LAST NIGHT, available May 20 on Blu-ray™* and DVD* from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. In a modern reimagining of the 1986 original film starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe, ABOUT LAST NIGHT follows two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom, and as their relationships are eventually put to the test in the real world. Directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine), the film also stars Paula Patton (Jumping the Broom), Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore) and Adam Rodriguez (Magic Mike).

This past spring, Veronica Mars returned and fans everywhere rejoiced. The cult TV series was adapted into a movie thanks to a massive Kickstarter campaign, which lead to basically anyone ever involved in the series to return for a fairly enjoyable film that would basically satisfy fans everywhere. Now the film is coming to Blu-ray. It will certainly be easier checking out this film on a crisp HD disc than the UV process many complained about as far as the digital copy process for most backers goes, so maybe check out this post to learn more about the upcoming release.

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier opening in wide release and Under the Skin opening in limited release this weekend, it seemed only fitting to continue providing coverage surrounding all things related to Scarlett Johansson; and while Why So Blu’s Brandon Peters continues his very detailed log regarding her pregnancy, I am simply posting the trailer for her film Lucy, arriving in theaters on August 8th. From the look of it, Lucy appears to be a female-led futuristic take on the film Limitless. In addition, Luc Besson is the man behind the camera, which certainly raises my interests, even after recently suffering through The Family. Regardless, check out the trailer in this post and decide for yourself if the film looks like a good time.

When you see a press release like this, obviously one things comes to mind, “There was a season 1?” But yes, Comedy Bang! Bang! did have a first season (which I reviewed HERE) and now it has a second season arriving soon on DVD. This June everyone will be able to revel in the looney joy that comes from what host Scott Aukerman and musical, beat-boxing co-star Reggie Watts have to offer, as they bring on a multitude of guests, including Jessica Alba (Sin City), Aziz Ansari (“Parks and Recreation”), David Cross (“Arrested Development”), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Pee-wee Herman (“Pee-wee’s Playhouse”), Andy Samberg (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and many more! However your tastes in action-packed cinema run, BUSHIDO MAN: SEVEN DEADLY BATTLES has something for everyone. Incredibly choreographed fights encompassing seven different disciplines — stick, knife, sword, kung fu, nunchaku, firearm, and special weapons – make this the action movie of choice for summer viewing. Writer/Director Takanori Tsujimoto (Red Tears and Hard Revenge, Milly: Bloody Battle) reteams with renowned action choreographer Kensuke Sonomura (Resident Evil: Degeneration) and martial arts expert Mitsuki Koga for his best film to date.
