Zemeckis, Lloyd, Bergman & More Coming to The Criterion Collection in March 2019

This March, two iconoclastic landmarks of American cinema will join the Criterion Collection, making their Blu-ray debuts in long-awaited new restorations: pioneering writer-director-actor Barbara Loden’s lone feature, Wanda, a wrenching character study that charted a course for independent film; and Edgar G. Ulmer’s Detour, a pitch-dark Poverty Row thriller that distills film noir to its bitter essence. Carlos Reygadas will join the collection with his preternaturally assured debut, Japón, an existential journey through the Mexican countryside. Robert Zemeckis revisits the frenzy of Beatlemania in his raucous first feature, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, appearing in a new 4K restoration. Harold Lloyd journeys out west-and delivers some of his most elaborately inventive set pieces-in the delightful comedy The Kid Brother, appearing on Blu-ray for the first time. And there’s more: Criterion’s yearlong series of Ingmar Bergman releases will continue with a stand-alone edition of The Magic Flute, the director’s effervescent take on Mozart’s beloved opera.

The Sea Hawk (Blu-ray Review)

Warner Archive hits double duty in terms of specific classic cinematic wants for Blu-ray aficionados and old school films lovers. More old swash buckling adventures of Errol Flynn and more films from legendary Hollywood workman director Michael Curtiz. Luckily that can be you can hit two birds with one stone quite easy with these two film icons. For their tenth team-up, director Michael Curtiz and action star Errol Flynn served up a rapier sharp take on the pirate movie by flavoring it with a much-needed soupçon of war-time patriotism during the dark days of Britain under the blitz, creating the standard for sea-faring cinema for decades to come. Despite borrowing the title from Rafael Sabatini, The Sea Hawk’s scribes Howard Koch and Seton I. Miller came up with an original story inspired by the life and exploits of Sir Francis Drake. Using the Amazon link below, you can order yourself a copy to have on release day, December 18th.  Continue reading ‘The Sea Hawk (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Picnic’ (Eureka Classics) on Blu-ray – February 2019!

Picnic is a portrait of the desires and frustrations simmering under the surface on an ordinary Labor Day in a small Kansas town. Starring William Holden in one of his most iconic roles, and Kim Novak in the performance that made her a star, the film is one of the most fondly remembered American classics of that decade, adapted by director Joshua Logan from his own Broadway production (which won a Pulitzer for playwright William Inge).  Drifter Hal (Holden) returns to his hometown, unemployed and with his college football glory days long behind him. Reunited with his old friend Alan (Cliff Robertson), Hal soon becomes acquainted with the Owens sisters, beautiful Madge (Novak) and budding poetess Millie (Susan Strasberg), along with the Owens family’s boarder, schoolteacher Rosemary (Rosalind Russell). While Millie longs for Hal, his affections turn to Madge, and at the holiday picnic, passions ignite, jealousies erupt, accusations and rage explode, and Hal and Madge must decide if they can escape their small, stifling hometown.  Continue reading ‘‘Picnic’ (Eureka Classics) on Blu-ray – February 2019!’

Dracula: Prince Of Darkness – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Scream Factory has announced they’ll be diving deep into the Hammer Horror archives in 2019. We are getting a taste for it here at year’s end with the Collector’s Edition release of Christopher Lee’s second turn as the famed Count in Dracula: Prince of Darkness. You’ll remember Millennium previously released the film, but Scream Factory looks to be making a serious upgrade on that edition. Scream Factory is no stranger to the Hammer catalog, but this is their first foray into the production company’s work since The Vampire Lovers back in 2013. I’m very excited to see them kicking off with my personal favorite of the Christopher Lee Dracula films, complete with a brand new 4K scan. You can pre-order from the Amazon link below to receive it by the December 18th release date, just in time for the gift-giving holidays! Horror Of Dracula (Blu-ray Review)

Warner Archive has been killing it for a while now, but its been especially exciting the last few months as they’ve unleashed three Hammer Horror Dracula films on Blu-ray that were previously not available in the United States. Following The Satanic Rites of Dracula and Dracula AD 1972 comes the one that started it all, Horror of Dracula. Odd that it came AFTER those two (As well as a set released a few years ago that had Dracula Has Risen From The Grave and Taste The Blood Of Dracula), but I’ll take it in whatever order they are going to give it. You’ll be able to see the film that launched a successful, flagship franchise from Hammer, our first look at Christoper Lee and Peter Cushing in their iconic iterations of Dracula and Van Helsing. You’ll be able to sink your teeth into the Blu-ray (Which sadly only features a trailer) when it arrives on the last new release Tuesday of the year, December 18th. Make sure you pre-order your copy using the Amazon link below before returning to your coffin.  Continue reading ‘Horror Of Dracula (Blu-ray Review)’

The Mangler – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

One cool thing that can happen with the horror genre is that team ups of legends tend to happen with a low-key frequency. Not in the shared universe sense, but camera from behind and in front of the lens. The Mangler, coming from Scream Factory on December 11th, boasts the written talents of icon Stephen King, the directorial mastery of Tobe Hooper and the performance bliss of one Robert Englund. Quite a trifecta. One other thing under the radar for The Mangler is that Ted Levine, who put a legendary stamp on Silence of the Lambs is here too. Its packed, and Scream Factory is giving it the beloved Collector’s Edition treatment. See their showcase by pre-ordering a copy using the Amazon link below and having it just in time for those mangy, mangling holidays! The Thing From Another World (Blu-ray Review)

Seems to be a lot of these former wishlist titles have mine have been getting scratched off in just the last couple of months. A big and surprising one has been Howard Hawks’ classic The Thing From Another World. We are finally getting it here (Available NOW, I believe, after being delayed from November) in 2018. While John Carpenter’s remake of the film has scored itself quite a few editions on Blu-ray, this one has seemingly been collecting dust. Unlike Carpenter’s version, we unfortunately get no special edition or any bonus materials to speak of (Aside from trailers). What needs to be remembered, is its important that at least the film carries on and is restored to the newer and better format first and foremost. Hawks’ film is an important piece of genre history for both horror and science fiction and should grace every genre collector’s shelves. Have it grace yours by using the wonderful Amazon link below. Smallfoot (Blu-ray Review)

Smallfoot (Blu-ray Review)Smallfoot, which kinda seemed like a smaller movie, actually surprised me when I checked out its Box Office report. It didn’t cross the $100 million mark domestically ($82 million), but did cross it on the global release scale with over $200 million. It opened solid at the end of October neck and neck with Night School and than sorta snuck through the powerhouse October of Venom, Halloween and A Star Is Born as the kids animated movie of choice. It features the powerhouse vocal stylings of Channing Tatum, LeBron James, James Corden and Gina Rodriguez. And hey, smart move here, as Warner Brothers is getting this one out to Blu-ray (No 4K, boo!) before/during the Holiday season. It’ll be out next Tuesday, so go ahead and get the pre-order in for the kiddos to watch now or throw in as a gift from them or your fellow Yeti enthusiast.  Continue reading ‘Smallfoot (Blu-ray Review)’
