As if Tom Hanks had more to prove, Captain Phillips gives him the chance to truly shine as a performer and deliver one of his best performances of all time. Not to under credit the rest of the film, the Paul Greengrass docudrama was a fantastic film filled with tension and well worth checking out (my […]

It is not as though I am completely averse to movies with intentions of having good-natured stories or ones that thrive on inevitably sweet and heart-warming outcomes, but sometimes a premise and those involved can give you that idea and sway your interest elsewhere. I have not seen Mary Poppins in many years and do […]

There are many great moments in Captain Phillips, the drama that recreates the true story of a hijacking of a container vessel by Somali pirates that took place in 2009, based on the memoir of Captain Richard Phillips. One moment that comes to mind is a look that Tom Hanks gives during an early part […]

Given that Tom Hanks has a couple films coming out this fall, might as well put out one of his classics as well, so here we have the 25th Anniversary edition of Big on Blu-ray. Big is one of those films that I love to watch, whenever I see it on somewhere. It features a […]

Ever see something so confusing that looks so mind-bending that you just had to see it with your own eyes despite what your better judgment and gut told you? Well, that’s exactly how I felt about Cloud Atlas and its many bizarre, but very bold and ambitious trailers out there. Much like the story within […]

That Thing You Do! was the directorial debut of Tom Hanks from back in 1996 and it is still a joy to watch. The film is a light-hearted look at a fictional band that became a one-hit wonder sensation during a summer in the 60s. The film features a simple, but very accessible story, fun […]

Well it’s about time! As much as I like getting to see big blockbusters on Blu-ray for their awesome sound and video quality, and as much as I like to see old classics get their restored treatment on Blu-ray, there are still a good number of more modern films that have yet to make their […]

For all the sequels and blockbuster we have gotten this year, an ambitious, high-budgeted, semi-independent film has certainly tried to push itself to the top as well. Cloud Atlas is one of the more unique films I have seen this year, as it not only swaps between six different storylines, but six different time periods, […]

To me, 2011 was a pretty unusual year. I say that because I found there to be an unusual amount of great films that came out in both the realm of mainstream feature films and the realm of art house and independent features. This year, like any year, had its share of duds as well, […]

I guess Tom Hanks could at least receive a “Thanks For Trying” award. Back in 1996, Hanks made his directorial debut with That Thing You Do, a film that oozes likable charm. Now, he has made Larry Crowne, a film that oozes something else. I am not sure what it is that drove Hanks to […]

It’s the end of 2010, and with that I have a list of my favorite movies. The following list contains all of the films that I felt defined what I seek out in most films; namely that they have elements of entertainment, intrigue, or master craftsmanship when it comes to the filmmaking. Some may only have a few of these aspects covered, others may have all three bases dominated. Given my lengthy honorable mention section, there were certainly a good number of films that I had to choose from, but this list, I feel, represents the best of what 2010 had to offer theatrically:
