Interview with Chillerama’s Anton Troy

So like most things in my life, events happen and transpire unexpectedly and generally for a reason…at least I tend to always cling on to that hope they do.  Such was the occasion when not only did I get to attend the premiere screening of Chillerama at Comic-Con with one of my favorite directors, Adam Green (listen to my full interview with him here), but also got to meet and converse with directors Tim Sullivan, Adam Rifkin and Joe Lynch, as well as the fabulous ensemble cast that was on hand to meet and greet fans and press alike.  Among such talent was an actor named Anton Troy.  Along with my San Diego DJ friend, Lauren Winston, we got the exciting opportunity to attend the film’s after party at an upscale nightclub called Stingaree.  We ended up enjoying a beautiful evening with the cast and crew of “I Was a Teenage Werebear,” the second segment in the horror/comedy anthology Chillerama (see the full review here). Interview With The Cast Of ‘Bellflower’

Bellflower is certainly one of the more unique and original films that I had the chance to see this year.  As I described in my review (found HERE), the film is about two guys, a girl, and flamethrowers.  Medusa, a muscle car equipped with flamethrowers is a major symbol of the film, but it is also a relationship drama of sorts, as writer/director/star Evan Glodell’s character deals with the journey of tormented love, mixed with some surreal imagery that channels the apocalyptic stakes that this film throws at the viewer.  I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview the entire cast of the film, which is what will follow below. SDCC 2011 – Relativity Media: Immortals

Saturday was another busy day for San Diego Comic Con.  Unfortunately I was not able to attend the panel in Hall H for Francis Ford Coppola’s new film Twixt, which I have heard was one of the more interesting panels at Comic Con.  However, right after I caught a glimpse of Coppola, I did manage to get seated for the panel that followed afterward, which is the new Greek Myth-themed action epic, Immortals.  While some may be interested (or disinterested) because of its at-first-glance similarities to 300, I have been intrigued by this film due to director Tarsem Singh, who has a unique visual style.  I’ll admit that I was also really hoping to see star Mickey Rourke at the panel as well, but unfortunately he was a no show.  That said, audiences still got to witness a pretty killer panel, as we were treated to some very cool clips from the film and some insight about the production. SDCC 2011: Nickelodeon: The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra

Avatar: The Last Airbender was a Nickelodeon series that ran for three seasons, starting in 2005.  It was praised for being both a strong action series and for containing a compelling story and characters, who all possessed their own personalities and arcs.  That series reached its very fitting end in 2008, but the plans for a continuation in some way has been in the making for some time.  Finally, at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the creative team behind The Last Airbender spent time explaining the new continuation of the series, The Legend of Korra, and premiered a first look at the new season. SDCC 2011: Sony: The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, 30 Minutes or Less, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Among the biggest things at San Diego Comic Con this year, people were heavily anticipating panels for Spielberg and The Adventures of Tintin, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and of course Twilight.  Another widely anticipated event would be the reveal of new footage from the upcoming Spider-Man film.  During the Sony Pictures panel on Friday in Hall H, fans were treated not only to the new adventures of everyone’s favorite web head, but an entire two and a half hour block worth of panels to promote not only Spider-Man, but also Total Recall, 30 Minutes or Less, and the surprisingly promising Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  This really was a packed panel, which did its best to provide plenty of buzz worthy news about each upcoming film. Comic-Con 2011: Twilight

Hey all you TwiHearts, I had the pleasure of covering the Breaking Dawn Part 1 panel in Hall H at Comic Con on Thursday morning!  People had been in line since Sunday, talk about dedication.  I decided I better secure a place too, so I settled in about 7 pm the night before.  There were already hundreds of people ahead of me, Moms, Dads, people of all ages.  The Twilight series has touched the hearts of so many people, not just teenage girls.  The dedication and devotion of these fans is just so over whelming.  Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2011: Twilight’

Comic-Con 2011: Spartacus: Vengeance – Roundtable Interviews

Spartacus: Vengeance is the name of the show.   It’s the second full-length season of the highly successful Starz premium television show, Spartacus: Blood and Sand.   Need I say anything more?  Seriously.   This is the moment we have all been waiting for ladies and gentleman.   This is the real deal.   And today we are here to celebrate everything Spartacus.   Hold on tight.   Just like the language and gratuitous nudity the cable television show offers, you never quite know what to expect and besides…I like to keep people guessing.   So it gives me great pleasure and honor to provide you, our readers, with exclusive roundtable interview coverage and photos recorded/taken with the stars of the hit series, Spartacus. SDCC 2011: DreamWorks: Fright Night

It is funny how two Hall H panels in a row featured films that have vampires in the lead roles, during a sunny Friday afternoon at San Diego Comic Con.  Following the Screen Gems panel that featured Attack the Block and Underworld Awakening, next up was DreamWorks presentation of Fright Night, a remake of the 1985 horror/comedy/cult classic.  For an hour long panel that was not about to bring people to ecstatic levels like the Tintin panel earlier in the day, a commendable job was done thanks to the presence of the cast/crew (namely Colin Farrell), multiple clips from the film, and a cool and appropriate choice for the panel moderator. Comic-Con 2011: Interview with CHILLERAMA’s Adam Rifkin & Tim Sullivan

In addition to my interview with Adam Green this past Friday at the Gas Lamp Cinemas in San Diego, I also got the chance to sit down and candidly speak with Chillerama directors Adam Rifkin and Tim Sullivan.  Never having met these two gents before, I was optimistic that our conversation would be both fruitful and exciting.  And thankfully, both results and more were yielded.  I know I say this constantly about Mr. Green, but these two gents, Rifkin and Sullivan, are some of the nicest people you will ever meet in Hollywood.  You know how when you meet someone for the first time you reserve judgment for a few minutes until you get to know them?  First impressions, whether it be body language or whatnot, are really important and can make or break the interview experience.  Well I kid you not, these two had me from hello. Comic-Con 2011: Interview with CHILLERAMA’s Adam Green

Whenever I get the chance to talk to writer/director Adam Green, I jump at the opportunity to do so.  I drop everything I’m doing and I seize the moment.  Because for me, talking with Adam Green is more valuable than any education in film that you will ever receive.  All one has to do is watch the behind the scenes extras or listen to the commentaries on Hatchet, Hatchet 2 or Frozen to completely understand where I’m coming from.  Simply put, you will never find a nicer person in Hollywood who is willing to not only pay attention to you, but also give you priceless advice.  And I encourage you that whenever Adam speaks, you listen carefully and take precise notes because this man is a walking book of knowledge to all us aspiring filmmakers. Comic-Con 2011: CHILLERAMA

Chillerama is an upcoming direct-to-video comedy/horror anthology film consisting of four stories that take place at a dusk ’till dawn monster movie marathon in an old school drive-in in California.  Considering Adam Green is involved, would you really expect anything less than “old school?”  Come on!  But more importantly, Chillerama was premiered to us live at Comic-Con 2011 and I couldn’t be happier about it. Each story (or segment) is a homage to a different style and a different genre.  So aren’t you curious to know what each story is about?  You’re lucky I like you guys so much!  Come on…let’s further dissect Chillerama. SDCC 2011: Screen Gems: Underworld Awakening and Attack the Block

Mid-afternoon in Hall H on Friday at San Diego Comic Con was an interesting place to be when it came time for the Screen Gems panel.  As the studio had two films to plug, one being the fourth in a successful franchise that I have no real interest in and the other being a future cult classic in the making, which has little mainstream attention thus far.  Suffice it to say that this panel seemed like it would have very clear ups and downs for me; however, I came away moderately interested in Underworld Awakening and continuing to hope that Attack the Block becomes at least a mild success as far as limited release genre films are concerned.  It also helps that the presence of director Edgar Wright can make any panel incredibly enjoyable. Comic-Con 2011: A Talk with Clone Wars Actress/Entrepreneur Ashley Eckstein

I had the good fortune of interviewing Ashley Eckstein during this year’s Comic-Con about her character Ahsoka Tano, who happens to be Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  During our chat we discussed the show’s future, her character’s not-so-rosy future fate, the franchise’s generational shift, and the business she created called Her Universe which sells cool sci-fi clothes to women.  She’s also married to Major League Baseball player and two-time World Series Champion, David Eckstein, and they generously support a variety of organizations and causes including, Mid-America Transplant Services, Donate Life and The Ronald McDonald House.  Our talk took place at at her booth on the convention floor which was incredibly noisy but I did the best I could to transcribe our loose informal conversation that flowed around customers, the Hulk himself, and the multitude of people.  Ashley was very sweet, friendly, and a pleasure to talk to and who was nice enough to take time away from her booming business to chat with me.

Comic-Con 2011: Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions

Any Robert Rodriguez fans in the house?  Well if there are, you’re in luck.  I was shocked to learn that Robert Rodriguez scored his very own Hall H panel.  That either means that the guy is a name brand now or the world of comics are taking Comic-Con back over by storm.  Or maybe it’s both?  Whatever the reason, I’m not complaining.  Anytime you can get Robert Rodriguez to talk to you…soak all that info up, baby!  Nevertheless, he was there to tell the captive audience about the following.  Buckle up and hold on! Comic-Con 2011: Hall H – Thursday

Comic-Con started with a bang this year.  Twilight was the first panel to headline the coveted Hall H lineup.  Believe it or not, there were fans standing in line outside the convention center for over a week waiting to get in.  Now that’s devotion!  Our own Mary Welms will have full coverage of that panel later this week, but for now, let’s focus on the following.  As you know, when you are at Comic-Con, even as a member of the press, it’s impossible to cover/hit everything. SDCC 2011: Relativity Media: Haywire and The Raven

It was easily going to be a difficult task to follow a panel that featured Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson in Hall H on Friday, at San Diego Comic Con, but the folks at Relativity Media attempted to do so anyway.  While not quite blowing anyone out of the water, this panel contained exciting previews for a new spy thriller, Haywire, from director Stephen Soderbergh and a horror mystery, The Raven, from director James McTeigue.  The directors and stars were available for each film and at least managed to strike up some interest and present some cool footage from these upcoming features. SDCC 2011: Paramount: The Adventures of Tintin

Friday morning at San Diego Comic Con 2011 started off with a bang, as the massive convention center hall known as Hall H was packed with people ready to see Steven Spielberg make his Comic Con debut.  Spielberg was of course at Comic Con to present his latest feature The Adventures of Tintin.  Audiences were treated to a big surprise as well, as fellow producer and intended director of the ‘Tintin’ sequel, director Peter Jackson joined Spielberg on stage to further make for a great panel.  Easily a great way to really get audiences going wild and begin a wonderful day for those, including myself, who were intending to spend the entire day inside of Hall H. Comic-Con 2011: Vampire Diaries

Yeah, yeah, yeah…I’m a guy so I’m not supposed to like the CW’s Vampire Diaries.  Go ahead.  I heard it all before.  So with that out of the way, it is with great pleasure that I got the opportunity to cover CW’s Vampire Diaries in Ballroom 20 at Saturday’s 2011 Comic-Con festivities.  In attendance on the panel were none other than Candice Accola, Paul Wesley, Kevin Williamson, Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Julie Plec.  And before I go any farther, there’s one thing I have to confess…I’m TEAM DAMON!  Wow!  It feels good to get that off of my chest.
