SDCC 2017: Psych Reunion and Movie Sneak Peek

Comic-Con 2017Get ready to spot some hidden pineapples! The “Psych” panel led by Jimmi Simpson and featuring stars James Roday, Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, Corbin Bernsen, series creator Steve Franks, and executive producers Chris Henze and Kelly Kulchak was a total blast with a sing-a-long of the show’s theme song, a Q&A with the panel, some reminiscing of memories from the show, and an excellent and much anticipated 8-minute clip from the upcoming Psych film, which comes to USA in December. The movie clip was clearly the main event as the ballroom packed to the gills with 4800 rabid “Psych-os” swelled with excitement over the first new scenes from the beloved characters in nearly 3 years. It looks awesome.

SDCC 2017: American Horror Story: CULT

Comic-Con 2017We’ve known for a while that the newest season of AHS would center around the presidential election, but until now, there’s been no word on a title. A series of videos at CC revealed both a new look and the title: “Cult.” Of course, there’s not much provided, but you can’t go wrong with a bunch of clowns in a circle.

SDCC 2017: Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Movie Trivia Mayhem

Comic-Con 2017Fans of comic book films, comedy, and trivia were treated to a highly entertaining comic book movie trivia panel hosted by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma). The format allowed for some very cunning improv moments by the Smith as well as participants, Marc Bernardin (“Fatman on Batman” Podcast), and Julie and Shawna Benson (writers for “The 100”), and the judges David Steinberger (CEO of ComiXology) and Col Needham (CEO of IMBd). Judged more on entertainment value rather than veracity of answers, this was a tremendously fun and funny event with plenty of irreverence and frivolity.

SDCC 2017: Bright looks awesome

Comic-Con 2017Bright was the panel I was honestly most interested in. From the moment it was announced, I’ve been following the production. Anything with director David Ayer has my interest. He’s an absolutely insane director, and when he’s not being held back by studio restrictions, he always delivers something that’s compelling and worth discussing after. I still believe that if we would have seen his original vision of Suicide Squad, we’d be singing a different tune. Bright looks precisely like the film to get the naysayers back on the Ayer train.

SDCC 2017: Brigsby Bear Bares His Heart To Hall H

Comic-Con 2017As much as Comic-Con likes to bring in the major studios to Hall H to show off footage and more for their upcoming blockbusters, there are also the smaller panels that put a highlight on other things. Brigsby Bear is one such thing. Here’s an upcoming indie film co-written by and starring Saturday Night Live‘s Kyle Mooney and produced by The Lonely Island. I’ve actually already seen the film and can say it’s a quirky comedy-drama with a lot of weirdness and heart. The panel for Brigsby Bear held onto that weirdness, as the Mooney and other cast and crew members went into how this film came about, following a presentation of the first 12 minutes of the film.

SDCC 2017: Death Note

Comic-Con 2017I’m curious to see how fans react to Death Note, the Netflix adaptation of the popular manga coming out on August 25th. Director Adam Wingard stated that while the film is faithful, it is through his own unique vision. Surprisingly, it wasn’t approached as a straight horror film, which was apparent in the clip that was shown. There’s a lot of dark humor, spread on thick by Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Ryuk.

SDCC 2017: Medinah World Premiere Sneak Peek

Comic-Con 2017“Battlestar Galactica” stars Michael Trucco and Tamoh Penikett were on hand along with Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) and Natasha Henstridge (Species) to introduce the world to what was being dubbed “The First-Ever Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series from the Middle East,” “Medinah.” The series was filmed in Qatar and has a number of Qatari actors filling out the cast in addition to Roberts, Henstridge, and Penikett. Even with the aura of being groundbreaking for a TV series giving it strength, there are a few clear reasons why “Medinah” has not yet been picked up for major distribution as well as a few reasons that “World Premiere Sneak Peak” lose a little luster when attached to a show like this.

SDCC 2017: First Look At Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling

Comic-Con 2017What better way to have fun at Comic-Con than by revisiting some old favorites. Thursday at SDCC featured a panel focused entirely on the 90s Nicktoon Rocko’s Modern Life. The show creator Joe Murray, along with the original voice cast, took the stage to discuss the show’s legacy. Additionally, the audience was treated to a first look at the upcoming TV special, Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. It was a real treat, as I was always a big fan of Rocko and was happy to not only relive some memories but also get a look at what’s to come for my favorite wallaby.

SDCC 2017: Kingsman The Golden Circle

Comic-Con 2017An Archer-Kingsman crossover was something that never really crossed my mind, but it makes perfect sense, especially after seeing it in action. The opening clip began with Eggsy running on rooftops and leaping from building to building, only it was in animated form. Very similar to the style of Archer. Eggsy finally arrives at Kingsman, but when he enters, he finds Archer in the dressing room, surrounded by weapons he “found” behind the hooks. After some Archer-esque banter, Eggsy suggests they deal with this escalating situation by determining who can drink the most alcohol. Before Eggsy can have an opportunity to pour, Archer has been to consume the bourbon straight from the bottle, and within a matter of seconds, it’s all gone, sending Archer to the floor.
