Surviving San Diego Comic-Con 101

Comic-Con SurvivalIt’s that time of the year.  What a glorious time it is!  The excitement’s practically in the air!  Can you smell it yet?  The spotlight is once again on one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, San Diego, CA!  Like that Beastie Boys’ song, “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” the same can be said for your experience at Comic-Con International, the largest annual gathering of geeks like me in the world.  How sweet it is!  Movie stars, comic artists, cosplay, vendors, movie studios, exclusives and so much more all vying for your attention and awaiting you for five mind blowing days!  I have been going to Comic-Con ever since 2009 and each year it keeps getting bigger and better.  However, that doesn’t mean it gets less chaotic at all, quite the contrary.  Every year it seems more crowded and packed, and if you want to see anything in Hall H, at least Thursday through Saturday, be prepared to camp out overnight.  For these reasons and more I put together some tips below culled from my personal experiences that will hopefully get fellow Con goers this year the maximum bang for their buck.  Good luck! A Quick Look At The Best Casino Movies Now on Blu-ray

The Best Casino Movies Now on Blu-rayBefore Ocean’s trilogy, 21 and the disappointing remake of The Gambler, the casino genre consisted of great films like The Cincinnati Kid and The Sting.  Movies released in the past decade haven’t all been bad, but IMDB’s list of top casino films demonstrate that there are very few that are just as stellar as the ones that premiered pre-2000s.  Let’s look a bit closer into this matter, shall we?  Read on! Red Army (Blu-ray Review)

Where comedy and drama are more universal categories, the documentary can be somewhat polarizing depending on the subject matter. In 1980, the USA Olympic Hockey team defeated the Soviet Red Army team for a shot at the gold medal game. This was not simply a grand moment in sports. It was democracy defeating communism. It was David, in the form of a team of college kids, defeating Goliath (professional-aged players with years of chemistry together). The documentary Red Army chronicles this event, but does so from the unique and previously unheard perspective of the Russian players. However, the content is not merely limited to the Olympic upset. Read on to discover the full attributes of this very immersive film. Continue reading ‘Red Army (Blu-ray Review)’

Mad Max Retrospective: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

Beyond Thunderdome THUMBWith my recent review of the Blu-ray for Mad Max from Scream Factory and its relatively convenient timing, I’ve had the itch to keep going writing about the series over here on Why So Blu.  No, this won’t be a review of the Blu-ray that has been out forever (Fun Fact: It was the fifth Blu-ray to be put in my collection).  This will just be a piece minus all the tech specs and recommendation.  We started with Mad Max and will go on through Mad Max: Fury Road and at the end rank the films (Where you can tell me how wrong, stupid, unqualified or dumb I am).  Those familiar know I do this kind of thing for my Naptown Nerd blog, but I thought since this one started over here at Why So Blu that I would just see the whole thing out here.  We’ve now come to the infamous THUNDERDOME portion of the retrospective.  Fun fact: When a Why So Blu writer refuses a Blu-ray title, Brian White then says angrily “Who run Blu-raytown? WHO run Blu-raytown?” Continue reading ‘Mad Max Retrospective: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)’

‘Black Sea’ Interview with Director Kevin Macdonald

black sea whysoblu kevin 2Black Sea is a heist film with an interesting twist.  It features Jude Law as a submarine captain, who is recruited to lead a crew of men in one submarine to the bottom of the Black Sea in order to recover lost Nazi gold from a sunken U-Boat.  I have a review for this film HERE, but Black Sea is a solid entry into the heist genre, with an emphasis on how obsession and distrust can overtake logic and reason, even in the most dire of scenarios, when teamwork is most important.  The film was directed by Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland), who I had the pleasure of interviewing.  Continue on to learn more about his influences for the story, his favorite submarine movies, the nature of filming with real submarines, and more!

TnT Presents ‘Child’s Play’ & ‘A Christmas Treat’ (Blu-ray/DVD Review)

Child's Play - A Christmas TreatThis one is sort of an abnormal review.  Not only is it a hybrid, a review coverage of both a Blu-ray and DVD, but also it’s a bit unorthodox the way in which I’m going about tackling this.  There’s no grading system employed here.  This one’s pure entertainment!  And let’s face it, there’s nothing new you or I can say about Tom Holland’s Child’s Play.  It’s quite simply one of the most iconic and classic horror films in the slasher genre.  And what about A Christmas Treat?  What about it?!  For those in the know (more about that below), it’s an underground cult hit that not only fueled Tim Sullivan’s career, but also planted the seeds of his trademark humor and wit in his later flicks.  So let’s do this.  I’m going to spend several paragraphs going deeper into what TnT Presents is all about and then I’m going to tackle these two releases we’re gathered here to talk about today one-by-one, complete with exclusive unboxing photos of everything you’ll find inside.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some major typing to do down below. Gregg’s Truly Top 10 Films of 2014

I had one final film to see before I felt I could compile an accurate list for the recently departed 2014.  Boyhood was a popular title amongst my fellow writers here, though that wasn’t showing in my area, thus escaping my viewing grasp.  Gone Girl came highly recommended though the trailer never attracted my interest enough to shell out money for the movie.  The film in question, however, was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.  After thoroughly enjoying last year’s Desolation of Smaug, I must admit that Five Armies ended up being a bit of a disappointment.  It was not a bad film, but it certainly did not soar either.  So, to my list it did not make.  With Tolkien’s tales at a cinematic close and Gone Girl gone from the cinema, I present you with my top ten films of the year as well as a couple notables.

Is Sony’s PSN Christmas Outage Makeup To Us Really Enough?

Playstation PlusI make it no surprise.  When it comes to televisions and home media players, there’s no other brand I’ll recommend or even own in my home other than Sony.  They build the best gear in my opinion (I’m not being paid to say this) and are worth the extra bucks over the competition as far as I’m concerned.  Also, when it comes to Blu-ray players, again in my opinion, you’ll never hear me speak of any other player besides the Playstation 3, the king of them all.  However, a funny thing happened this past January.  I became a gamer when I got my grubby paws on a Playstation 4 and did the unthinkable, I paid to become a Sony PSN Plus member so I could kick some arse online in the Call of Duty franchise, and also bask in all the other benefits the membership has to offer like free games, discounts, multiplayer matches and more.  We, the fans and players on the Playstation 4, come to rely on our PSN Plus memberships like crack to a junkie. Top Ten: Aaron’s Favorite Films of 2014

you-went-to-rehab-photo-u1The year of 2014 is literally coming to an end, but I am not letting it end without putting up a list of my favorite films of the year.  This is never an easy list to put together, but somehow I have not only listed my Top Ten favorites, I have actually managed to rank my top 30 films of the year.  Having seen 150+ films theatrically, there are certainly a lot of films to consider, but developing a master list of year-end material and then narrowing it down from there, basically led to me having a ranked list of 30 films.  Ultimately I went through a process of figuring out which films got the greatest response out of me and stuck with me throughout the year, in an effort to get the final ten films in order.  With that in mind, I am very satisfied with this final list that I have put together, mainly because it is a reflection of my own opinions that I am happy to share.  So here we go with my picks for the Top Ten films of 2014. (As per usual, I placed lots of Easter Eggs hidden in all the pictures).

Gregg’s Top 5 Duds of 2014

toilet

Oh yes, there were many more than five, and I’m sure Tammy was one of them, but I did not have any hope for that anyway. The following five films were works I had gone into with an open mind and wide eyes. In hindsight, they were wallet vacuums, stealing my money on account that someone responsible for them thought they were putting out a good product. I’ve got all the bases covered here too; comedy, family, action, etc. Most of all though, these five movies delivered boredom more than anything else.

Top Ten: Aaron’s Most Disappointing Films & The Worst Of 2014

jaiNever a post of joy, but every year does see the release of films that are not very good.  I never seek out films with the purpose of hating them and a majority of these are not without redeemable elements, but if I have at least 10 films on a list that I consider better than the rest I saw this year, then this is a list that features at least 10 films I would say are worse than everything else I saw.  I have also included the films I was most disappointed in, which are not necessarily bad movies, but not ones I would say lived up to their potential.  Final note:  this is my list, meaning I only saw so much of what was generally considered ‘terrible,’ basically meaning that I was not racing out to see Blended or I, Frankenstein, while I was also fine with certain ‘alleged’ atrocities, such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Trans4mers, so they won’t be anywhere near this list.  And with all that said, let’s dig into the bottom of barrel.

Top 20: Aaron’s Odds & Ends of 2014

Photo Dec 25, 9 15 10 PMI enjoy putting together different year end lists, as they tend to function as a way for me to put emphasis on a lot of film that I would hope people check out at some point (or avoid, in the case of the ‘Worst of’ list).  This year, given how I have ranked a large number of films in an effort to put together an ultimate Top 10+ list, I wanted to spend time creating a list focused on a solid selection of films that I may not go all the way in pronouncing as my end-of-year favorites, but certainly want to bring as much notice to them as possible.  With that in mind, here is a list of 20 films in alphabetical order, consisting of comedies, horror films, genre fun, documentaries and more, which I have a high level of admiration for.

Super-Sized Top Ten: Aaron’s Astonishing Blu-ray Picks For 2014

astonishing-194012This year I decided to go big with my list for the best Blu-rays.  Kicking off my Top 10 year-end lists for 2014 is an article devoted to what I consider to be the best the Blu-ray format has had to offer for this year.  These are films that I have been able to really dig into and see them as easy recommendations for anyone with the greatest home media format currently available.  Much like the previous years, I stayed true to some rules; I have to have actually watched the movie on Blu-Ray, recognize it for the quality of their video and audio transfers, delved into the special features, and attempt to keep off any film on this list that may also be on my “Top 10 Films of the Year” list,” which basically means no LEGO Movie.  I followed these rules for the sake of keeping my list interesting, along with creating some extra sections to provide even more highlights of the year, so here we go:

Do You Even Watch Blu-rays Bro?: Gerard’s Top-10 Blu-rays of 2014

I must have had other things on my mind but when I got the text this morning saying that my “Top-10 Blu-rays of 2014” list was due today I had to get into scramble mode fast! I should preface this list by saying that everything listed is from my own personal collection. If you see something on here that you think should have been on here and wasn’t that’ due to me probably not owning a copy of it. You may see more than one edition listed from foreign territories but I am region free, so when it comes to Blu-rays, there are open borders in this household. Anyways, enough yapping, here are my Top-10 Blu-rays of 2014. Take it away!   Continue reading ‘Do You Even Watch Blu-rays Bro?: Gerard’s Top-10 Blu-rays of 2014′

Interstellar: Having Thrice-Taken The Rocket Ride (Movie Review)

Interstellar Movie Review - RedoIn my belief, most salesmen, prophets, religious establishments and even motivational speakers will tell you life is full of second chances.  And like the fictional character of Jordan Chase in Season 5 of Showtime’s Dexter, if you want something badly enough in life, you just have to “Take It.”  Quite honestly, I have always lived my life by a single golden rule, learn from your mistakes.  Grow from them.  And of course, hopefully never make the same mistake(s) twice.  That’s why after talking to a fellow reviewer yesterday about a mistake I recently made in life, I’m ready to come clean and admit I was wrong.  I was wrong to initially award Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar a film score of 3.5 out of 5.  If George Lucas can tinker with the Star Wars saga as much as his 70-year-old heart desires, I think that warrants me the chance at redemption here. 9 Wishes Fulfilled & 15 More To Make – Celebrating 1 Year Of Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist

Brandon Fulfilled LogoOne year ago today, I wrote an article focusing on 14 movies I’d like to see on Blu-ray for the year 2014.  That article wound up becoming the pilot for what would sort of be a regular week-to-week series from me, whining about a movie that’s only on DVD or VHS and not here to Blu-ray yet.  It also made new release announcements an extra bit of fun for me if one of my random requests wound up coming to fruition.  From the original list, 6 titles (around 43%) wound up finding a Blu-ray release this year.  In addition, from my weekly articles, 3 of those wound up coming to fruition to make the Wishlist have about a 20% success rate.  While I’ve had a lot of fun with these pieces, due to life, work, busy-ness and whatnot, the Wishlist is going to be moving from the weekly format to a monthly one.  Its not that I’m out of ideas, its just that I am not having the sort of time I used to in writing these pieces.  But hey, today is a celebration of these pieces, so, let’s take a look at some of our success stories from the past year and then let’s do 15 more for 2015!
