Happy Halloween – tomorrow. I’ve saved my grooviest scary movie wishlist pick for last here. If you’ve ever seen this one, you’ll know its tons of fun and man o man do we wish for it to get the Blu-ray treatment. Make sure you check back next week (Wednesday to be exact) as it will have been one year since the original Wishlist article debuted and I’ll be doing things a little bit differently in light of that.

In honor of See No Evil 2 releasing this week from Lionsgate and WWE Films, and with Jacob Goodnight donning a mask for the new outing, it seemed fun to look back as some of my favorite or creepier slasher masks of all time. Here’s a list of 10, but I could have gone further as there are many masks and such that could have made the list as well and maybe you could shed light on them below. How does one qualify? Well, you have to don a mask that covers your face for your killing. No, Hannibal Lector’s restraint does not count, sorry. He’s not willing loving that masking popping it on so he can kill. And people like Freddy and Chucky are cool, but they are moreso monsters and we’re looking at their actual faces. Anywho, here’s my pick of Ten Creepiest Slasher Masks in alphabetical order by film. 2014 is just flying by as we are already in my favorite coveted month of October. The leaves have started to turn red and yellow and the ghosts and goblins are out there creeping about. This short list is made up of my favorite horror films that I like to watch during the Halloween holiday season. A slice of pumpkin pie and nice pumpkin craft ale and a nice horror movie hits the spot perfectly. This obviously isn’t a comprehensive but just a tasty sampler of films that are relatively short in running time but hit you right in your fear spot. In any event sit back and enjoy my Top-3 Halloween Horror Treats!

I’m gonna go pretty obscure with today’s title. I’ll be interested to see who remembers it. As a reminder, this month with the wishlist we are…of course…all about the horror. The director of this one’s only notable achievement following this one is An American Werewolf In Paris, which, could be another “Who remembers that one?” title, but it was definitely high profile back in 1997, way more than this one. I’ll just get on with it now and talk about a wonderful little surprise of a movie.

Take the “Booo!” in the title as either the ghostly scare sound or the hoards of fanboys’ reactions when something gets remade. Over the last 15 years or so we’ve seen plenty of reboots, reimaginings and remakes come to fruition throughout each film going year. The horror genre has certainly been the genre the most privy to getting remake-itis. but, it has always made a name for itself in that fashion. Its characters and stories have always been something of legend and folklore. How many times have we seen Dracula brought back in some way, shape or form (most recently this past weekend)? Yes, remaking everything is a bit tiresome, but I’ve never been one to turn my nose up at it. Aside from the remake film itself, it does many good things outside of that. It brings the original films and characters to the forefront of the conversation once again. People get the itch to go back and rediscover these old films (not all, but some do). They also give us terrific new versions of the films on home video with either stunning transfers or the bonus material interviews, deleted scenes and the like that we’ve always wanted. Life is full of disappointments. They can range from not getting a promotion you were up for, or your favorite restaurant closing down. However, few things in life can match the eye rolling anger that one gets when a favorite movie comes out on Blu-ray and disappoints us at every turn. It’s almost like the Chicago Cubs making it to the post season… you just can’t believe it. Continue reading ‘One Sad Day: When Blu-ray Go Bad’

Another week, another horror film on the wishlist and another sequel to boot. In the realm of horror, we’ve had countless sequels, and Blu-ray is the format that seemingly is hesitant or taking its time to crank a lot of them out into production. A lot of these movies have gone from big titles, hits at the theater or on home video and become somewhat of more obscure cult items with the passage of time. Its not just the horror genre either, even big time Schwarzenegger hits from the 80s seem to be more niche interest and those were huge A-list titles during their time.

And I’m back. Sorry for the inconsistency, but I’ve been a bit busy with other reviews and blog posts…and well…life outside of typing on a computer. I’m hoping to make a weekly march toward Halloween starting today, with a new horror movie each week. The genre has PLENTY of titles that have yet to see the light of Blu-ray greatness. Some mainstream, some well known and a lot of cult classic films. Today we’re starting with a film that boasts one of horror’s most notable actresses of all time, Linda Blair!

And after a short hiatus, the Wishlist is back! Today is a special one, too as its sort of a cross-over with my Naptown Nerd blog. The film I’m talking about today is also the same one I’ve already written about over there today as well. Currently, I’m doing a retrospective on the filmography of director David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, Social Network). We’ve now landed on the one sole film of his that is not out on Blu-ray in any territory. To check out my David Fincher Retrospective series on Naptown Nerd CLICK HERE. Also, if you’re interested, I have many other retrospective series cover film franchises and the like that you can find on the side bar. We’re finally here! The Expendables 3 comes out tomorrow. This is the end of our ‘Countdown To Expendables 3’ series. And if we started with Sly we’re ending on Schwarzenegger! Today’s pick is the biggest glaring hole, not only of Arnold’s catalog, but the director, the studio and Blu-ray as a whole. We have one that seems to be one of the biggest crimes against Blu-ray humanity for not being a part of the format. And its a huge head scratcher that this title wasn’t put out in the initial years of Blu-ray.

Mel Gibson is one of the newest action heroes of 80s/90s to hop on board the Expendable train. He’s actually the villain of the upcoming film. And what a dynamite choice. Gibson was pretty much unstoppable from Lethal Weapon to Signs. Hell, for me, I’d say from ’79 in Mad Max to then, but he wasn’t a huge marquee named with a big box office draw until ’87 with Lethal Weapon. He’s slowly been creeping back into films, but like the rest of the bunch, isn’t the draw he used to be. So, our “Countdown To Expendables 3” continues with a very terrific, very early film in Mel Gibson’s career, as well as director Peter Weir.

So there are plenty of ways I could go over the various panels I saw throughout my time at Comic Con. I have done so in a number of articles already, but all of this work certainly takes a lot of work. So, with that said, rather than recap the same panels in written form, which have been covered on the day and read by thousands already, I figured I would publish a couple podcast episodes featuring myself and friend/fellow movie lover/Comic Con veteran Alan Aguilera. The two of us took the time, during Comic Con, to go over our experiences from Wednesday through Saturday. These were recorded on Friday and Sunday mornings, with part 2 being a good example of how exhausted we were, after seeing so much. Continue on to listen to a couple bonus episodes from Out Now with Aaron and Abe (the podcast I co-host), which features discussions of Marvel, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Legendary Pictures, Sony Pictures, Sin City, Batman the TV Show, 24, Sleepy Hollow, Comedy Central, Adult Swim, and many other panel presentations, along with various stories, showroom floor experiences, and the craziness that was the Hall H line this year.

I wish I had time to check out a lot of other panels, but it is nice to be able to see some highlights, such as this. I may not currently be watching The Simpsons, but I am sure a panel featuring the creators is a lot of fun. Even better is having Homer Simpson make his Comic Con debut, which is what you can see in this post. Continue on to see Matt Groening and Homer Simpson converse on stage at Comic Con and learn more about the upcoming season.

I am very much looking forward to Gotham, when it debuts in the fall, but in the meantime, Fox is providing Comic Con guests and anyone who is in San Diego the chance to zip line through the city, which is pretty cool. Check out this post to see what its like and learn how you can participate, if you are in the area!

I have next to nothing to post, in regards to what happened in Hall H with Paramount, as I was not there. That said, we do have a very basic recap of what happened, provided by Paramount, including a trailer and some images. I wish this could be more all encompassing, but here we are: Thursday in San Diego Comic Con’s Hall H, Paramount shared exciting news about its upcoming films SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, PROJECT ALMANAC, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2, HERCULES, and INTERSTELLAR. Continue on to learn more.

We continue our ‘Countdown To Expendables 3‘ edition of the Blu-ray Wishlist with a film from the library of Expendables II star and scene stealer Jean-Claude Van Damme. When I was younger I was a pretty big Van Damme fan. He seemed to be the hipster choice of action star when it came to them. Van Damme had not only a fantastic marquee action name, but he also had a great run from the late 80s through the mid 90s (My personal favorite of his adventures being Timecop and Hard Target, but who doesn’t love the sheer ridiculous and craziness of Sudden Death). However, he was definitely with Seagal in that second tier below Arnold/Sly/Bruce. The forte that gave Van Damme a unique edge and introduction was that he was trained in martial arts and actually had movies that focused on the action being professional matches. Today we’re definitely taking a look at one of those. Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – July 25, 2014′
