Today I got the chance to chat with horror’s first “Scream Queen,” Miss Danielle Harris. To say I wasn’t looking forward to this day would be like saying I don’t like getting presents. I love getting presents! Miss Harris is most notably famous for her roles in the Halloween series, as young Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers and some twenty years later as Annie Brackett in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II. One of the most exciting things about attending Comic-Con each year is you never know who you are going to run into and meet there. With that being said, the highlight of Comic-Con 2010 for me was meeting Writer/Director/Producer Adam Green (see here). It was very much unplanned. And like most things in life, I believe fateful encounters happen for a reason. This was one of them. Not only did I meet one of the nicest people in Hollywood, but I was introduced to a man that I have nothing but the utmost respect for in life. I had the good fortune to be allowed to participate in a round-table discussion with the Director of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (and the National Treasure series) to promote the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD releases of the movie. A lot of times, it’s hard to get a lot of questions answered either due to the quantity of interviewers or because of time but Mr. Turteltaub was extremely generous by allowing us over two hours to talk with him so I was able to get in a lot of questions.

On Monday, November 1, 2010, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was screened at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), its star Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development), and the creator of the original comic book series, Bryan Lee O’Malley. This entertaining Q&A was moderated by director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy), which can be found in video form Here.

Tamara Drewe is a new film from director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Dangerous Liasons, High Fidelity), based on the popular English comic strip and graphic novel by Posy Simmonds, starring English actress Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans). As is the graphic novel, the film is a modern reworking of Thomas Hardy’s nineteenth century novel Far from the Madding Crowd. It is a comedy about a young journalist, once the ugly duckling of her small village town, returning as a much desired beauty, hoping to fix up and sell her old house. I was fortunate enough to participate in two separate round-table interviews with the legendary Disney animator Glen Keane who has played a central role in bringing many Disney movies to life including The Little Mermaid and especially Beauty and the Beast, where he was the lead animator for the character of the Beast. Mr. Keane is as modest and friendly as he is talented and he generously spent more time than was originally allotted to answer our questions. I remember it like it was only yesterday. While watching the Starz Originals heart-pounding series Spartacus: Blood and Sand about five episodes in or so, viewers were forced to deal with the devastating loss of Spartacus’ wife, the lovely Sura (Erin Cummings), pulling at our heartstrings. “Oh no,” we all thought to ourselves. This can’t be happening! Our heavenly eye candy was gone from the show just like that, albeit still visible courtesy of flashbacks here and there, but what was left now to motivate the broken warrior? It’s come that time to wrap up the last of my 2010 Comic-Con articles. It proved to be yet another grand weekend of stars, starlets, ink, film and fun in San Diego this year. On Wednesday’s preview night, I took a moment to focus more on the ink than anything else, spending some time at the Image Comics booth. ‘Booth’, however, is an understatement, as the Image area covers some significant square footage and is dotted with a variety of company talent. It was only a couple weeks ago when WhySoBlu covered the June 26th mixed martial arts event that featured special guest and MMA star, Anderson Silva. The fighting spectacular featured four bands that day with the headliner being a hard rock band simply known as MUSH. The band played relentlessly, donned in black under the blistering summer sun. Belting out tunes like Frostbite and Remembrance, the five-member band unleashed a torrent of original works along with covers from bands like Korn. This week at Why So Blu features the third of our three MMA fighter interviews and we’d like to extend a big thank you to the athletes as well as CageStars for their time and hospitality. In this interview, we focus our time on the energized Adam Bogle. As Bogle gets ready to deliver a beating on his next opponent, he also took a moment to educate me and the Why So Blu readers on mixed martial arts and his experience in the cage. This week at Why So Blu highlights the second of our three MMA fighter interviews. We are happy to introduce Ohio native Mike Maderitz. Maderitz competes in the lightweight class and, like Brandon Vasquez (see last week’s story), is drawing his focus toward the fast approaching date of June 26th when he will match skills with opponent Stephen Harness. Until recently, my interaction with mixed martial arts fighters was pretty much nonexistent. After the good folks at CageStars and Chu To Bu West Gym showed me around, I was an educated man. As photographer Scott Morrison and I first walked into the gym, a Jiu Jitsu class was well under way on one end of the room, while the other featured the MMA athletes hard at work, attacking the punching bag with lightning-quick jabs and high-flying knees. The first fighter I had the opportunity to sit down with was the 185-pound Brandon Vasquez from Lorain, Ohio. Continue reading ‘Inteview with MMA Fighter Brandon Vasquez’

As MMA (mixed martial arts) matches seem to dot the fighting landscape at every turn, there is no denying the boxing will forever remain the classic fighting favorite among fans. There is a certain grace, class, and strategy to boxing that separates the sport from its MMA brethren, making it much more than a caged street brawl. Talent continues to pour from every corner of the U.S. as young boxers lace up the gloves for their love of the fight and their hopes of a successful career in the ring. Every once in a blue moon you come across some unlikely artistic pairing that just makes you wonder how the two ended up together. The funny thing is, these odd combinations can somehow come together and pull it off. Call it fate, call it the planets being in alignment, or just call it two different forms of talent gelling with one another. There was Nelly and Tim McGraw, Def Leppard and Taylor Swift, but how about the 1960’s flavor of go-go dancing and the smooth sound of rockabilly? Typically, when you come across an author, they specialize in one type of format. Their area of expertise is usually one in novels, short stories, poetry, or even comic books, but a combination of two or more of these is a rarity. Such is the case with author Mike Haszto. The former New Yorker and St. Anthony High School graduate didn’t spend his youth focused on writing though. Haszto utilized his extracurricular time on the soccer field, the baseball diamond and the hockey rink. Continue reading ‘Mike Haszto – From Athlete to Author’
