My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Adventures Of The Cutie Mark Crusaders (DVD Review)

My-Little-PonyAh, yes, the My Little Pony DVD with the incredibly long title.  I had to look up what exactly it all was.  So, this is a fourth generation My Little Pony show.  It’s called My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.  Just like the Transformers have something like Transformers: Beast Wars.  This particular collection of episodes is then dubbed Adventures Of The Cutie Mark Crusaders.  Okay, you got all that?  This show is pretty well known for its large cult following of males.  No, not kidding, look it up, they’re called “Bronies”.  Apparently, it has something to do with fandom of one of the head writers of the series.  It was intended for young girls 2-11, but the boys have pretty much taken the fandom over.  The criss-cross is certainly eye-opening and surprising.  I was looking forward to seeing what this was all about and how it could happen. Regular Show: Mordecai Pack (DVD Review)

Regular-Show-Mordecai-PackCartoon Network’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series Regular Show is bringing the laughs with an all-new DVD: Regular Show: Mordecai Pack! Chock-full of 16 Mordecai-centric episodes from the latest seasons! The Mordecai Pack follows Mordecai and the rest of the gang on their extreme and surreal misadventures.  This 1-Disc DVD set will be available on January 27th from Warner Brothers Home Video Entertainment and the wonderful folks over at Cartoon Network.  Regular Show airs ALLLLLL THE TIME over on Cartoon Network.  So if you have the channel, chances are you can land on it and check it out in the next couple hours.  This is a show I’m particular fond of but don’t watch near enough.  It features call backs and humor that I scratch my head whether kids of the “target audience” are going to understand.  But, that’s sort of the beauty of it that I can watch it with my kids to equal enjoyment.  Continue reading ‘Regular Show: Mordecai Pack (DVD Review)’

TnT Presents ‘Child’s Play’ & ‘A Christmas Treat’ (Blu-ray/DVD Review)

Child's Play - A Christmas TreatThis one is sort of an abnormal review.  Not only is it a hybrid, a review coverage of both a Blu-ray and DVD, but also it’s a bit unorthodox the way in which I’m going about tackling this.  There’s no grading system employed here.  This one’s pure entertainment!  And let’s face it, there’s nothing new you or I can say about Tom Holland’s Child’s Play.  It’s quite simply one of the most iconic and classic horror films in the slasher genre.  And what about A Christmas Treat?  What about it?!  For those in the know (more about that below), it’s an underground cult hit that not only fueled Tim Sullivan’s career, but also planted the seeds of his trademark humor and wit in his later flicks.  So let’s do this.  I’m going to spend several paragraphs going deeper into what TnT Presents is all about and then I’m going to tackle these two releases we’re gathered here to talk about today one-by-one, complete with exclusive unboxing photos of everything you’ll find inside.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some major typing to do down below. Reno 911!: The Complete Series (DVD Review)

reno 911 whysoblu coverI recall being a very young lad and watching MTV trying to figure out what ‘good’ music was, by chance I stayed up late enough to watch a group of young up and coming sketch comedy actors on the show, The State.  I had no real idea of what I was watching but I was riveted.  It was odd and I didn’t get all of the jokes, but I still laughed because I was that guy all the way back then. Eventually the show was cancelled, this was back before the internet and I had no idea why or where these young actors went.  I was upset but eventually time went on and I saw Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black pop up on their own new show Viva Variety on Comedy Central a number of years later. I was stoked!  I was older so I understood more of the jokes and I was just happy to see some talented and deserving comedians on TV again.  And like the The State, Viva Variety was cancelled.  A chubby, nerdy, and Latino Jr High school child cried out, “IS THERE NOTHING JUST IN THIS WORLD?!?!?!”  Luckily, there would be another chance for Lennon and company to bring me more comedic joy.  In 2003, Comedy Central premiered Reno 911! and it was a critically and commercially successful show, and most importantly, I got more than just a season or two of it.  It was created by three The State alums, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant.  While the show had 6 seasons, not all episodes were on the same level of hilarity, but they were all consistently funny.  Follow me and we go through each season together… Ladies and gentlemen, let’s visit Reno!

Arrested Development: Season 4 (DVD Review)

arrested development s4Arrested Development is one of my all-time favorite television series.  Mitch Hurwitz created the kind of sitcom that was hilarious, witty, well-acted, one-of-a-kind, and ahead of its time.  All of that means it was very well-regarded by critics, won numerous awards, and pockets of audiences knew the amazing show they were getting, only see it cancelled after a shortened third season.  Now, after years of rumors, we were able to find the entire cast back together again for a noble Netflix experiment.  Season 4 of Arrested Development was released last year on the popular streaming service and has now arrived on DVD in a nifty three-disc package.  Now I can really delve into my thoughts on the latest adventures of the Bluth family.

Cantinflas (DVD Review)

CantinflasIt was bound to happen but sooner rather than later works fine with me. The film Gods have bestowed a biopic of the Mexican version of Charlie Chaplin in Cantinflas, the tramp, with a heart of gold. Oscar Jaenada (The Losers) and Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) star. One glaring omission that has to brought up before we go any further is the lack of a Blu-ray edition and this seems to be an intentional decision for whatever reason. There is only a DVD version available in the U.S., but I have read that there is a Mexican Blu-ray version ripe for importing if you so desire. In any event we’ll do our best with what we got. Let’s move forward with our review of Cantinflas on DVD!   Continue reading ‘Cantinflas (DVD Review)’

Drunk History: Seasons 1 & 2 (DVD Review)

Drunk-HistoryDrunk History is the brain child of Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner.  Apparently inspired by drunk ramblings of New Girl star Jake Johnson during a night out.  It originally was produced and air on the comedy website Funny Or Die.  In 2013, the web show was brought to the television format on Comedy Central.  It was produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.  Drunk History has now been running for two seasons, and I’m pretty sure a third is on the way.  I watched a good handful of the web series (which I liked), but never got around to checking out the Comedy Central version.  And with this uncensored DVD, I’m pretty glad I was able to just now dive into it for this review. Cartoon Network Holiday Collection (DVD Review)

Cartoon-Network-Holiday-CollectionCartoon Network has put together some Holiday focused episodes of some of their in-house produced series and put them to use on a nice DVD.  This DVD serves as a sort of sampler of sorts to their programming as well.  The shows appearing with spirited episode son the disc are the super popular Adventure Time (Gets two episodes all to itself), the strange and funny Regular Show and the fun The Amazing World Of Gumball.  Though, a closer look shows this might be more of a secretive promotional disc as you can see that they’ve also included two “Bonus Episodes” that don’t have anything to do with the holidays.  Those two episodes come from the recently started show Clarence and the currently running (in the middle of season one), Steven Universe. The Taking Of Deborah Logan (DVD Review)

Taking Of Deborah LoganThe Taking Of Deborah Logan boats “From The Producer Of X-Men and Trick r’ Treat” because Bryan Singer is a producer on it.  Although, I’m not too sure how involved the guy is on it, as its a low budget found footage horror cash in that doesn’t at all feel like some sort of passion or special project.  Jill Larson, Anne Ramsay, Michelle Ang and Ryan Cutrona who have all no doubt popped up in various things you may have seen over the years.  Over the last five years we’ve had a zillion of these found footage exorcism/possession/haunted house movies, so what would it be with this film that would set it apart from the pack?  Or would it just be another run of the mill exercise in the horror found footage aesthetic?  I guess that’s what I’m here to analyze and take a look at. Awkward. Season 3 (DVD Review)

awkward whysoblu thumbBased on a string of positive notice from some TV reviewers I trust, MTV’s Awkward is a show I have been keeping up with in passing.  It has the basic structure of a high school sitcom, with all the familiar tropes, but the writing has just been a lot smarter and self-aware in a way that made it more enjoyable than a lot of what I see in this sort of genre these days.  Especially given that MTV has become a weird zone of bad reality TV and no music whatsoever, this series is one of the network’s few bright spots, even in its current incarnation, which unfortunately lost its original showrunner.

The Wonder Years – The Complete Series (DVD Review)

Wonder-YearsSince the advent of television on DVD, one series has had a vocal push to get it out and available for purchase.  The Wonder Years, the 1960s/early 70s coming of age television show was beloved and still cherished to this day.  Many years went by and there were never any plans for it.  Then it was discovered in the early/mid 2000s that the reason was because of music licensing rights.  Contracts were different when The Wonder Years aired, and selling home video rights with the music was covered back then.  The task to get all those rights together and taken care of would be an expensive and exhaustive process.  Some shows, like Dawson’s Creek and Married With Children said to hell with it and released theirs with new temp track music and songs that take a way a little bit of the lust from which you remembered it.  Well, time and patience has finally paid off for The Wonder Years as StarVista has put together the complete series with all the original music intact. To Be Takei (DVD Review)

To-Be-TakeiTo Be Takei is an entertaining and moving look at the many roles played by eclectic 77-year-old actor/activist George Takei whose wit, humor, and grace has allowed him to become an internationally beloved figure. The film offers unprecedented access to the day-to-day life of George and his husband/business partner Brad Takei and chronicles George’s fascinating personal journey, from his childhood in a U.S. internment camp for Japanese Americans during WWII, to his iconic and groundbreaking role as Sulu on Star Trek to his rise as an internet phenomenon with over 7-million Facebook fans. The film shows what it truly means To Be Takei. Continue reading ‘To Be Takei (DVD Review)’

Reign Season 1 (DVD Review)

Reign Season 1The CW put out a great fun dramatic new series last year, The Originals, but it also put out another new series, Reign.  Now while the show is inspired, it really offers very little in terms substance or anything new.  It’s essentially just like any of the other teeny soapy shows that they are accused of doing but with a period piece setting to mask it.  CW has had a good run with me in regards of being surprised with their programming lately.  Instead of being a fun and campy genre piece, Reign just ends up being fluffy teenage camp.   This is not my cup of tea, but Warner Brothers continues its excellent home video release reputation and Reign is beautiful. Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD – Season 1 (DVD Review)

Agents-Of-Shield-S1As a part of Marvel’s Phase II, they decided to take the small screen with a series in support of their theatrical features and One-Shots.  That show would be Agents Of SHIELD, following SHIELD agents going around the country stopping baddies and discovering new people with superheros and supernatural artifacts.  It was also promised to be linked to the cinematic universes and sometimes would cross over with the events of movies and maybe a (realistic, sorry fanboys, Tony Stark is never coming to TV) character or two would show up on in an episode.  Another bombshell, the show would be led by Agent Coulson, back from the dead after being impaled by Loki in The Avengers. Devil’s Mile (DVD Review)

Devil's-MileRoad horror movies aren’t super rare, but they don’t come incredibly often.  Normally they are the “killer is following us!” fashion.  Those like The Hitcher and Joyride.  But, I can’t seem to come up with any that deal with supernatural demons in a sort of ghost movie.  This premise did interest me a bit as it sounded sort of From Dusk Til Dawn with ghosts on the highway type thing.  Although, worry sets in when I see the director is also the guy who wrote Robocop: Prime Directives, which I attempted to watch but just couldn’t make it through.  Boredom City.  Maybe his hand would fare better as the “prime director”.

Rampage: Capital Punishment (DVD Review)

Rampage-Capital-PunishmentHe’s been called the German Ed Wood.  He’s began his directorial career with makes video game adaptation after video game adaptation.  There’s urban legends that he keeps getting money to make movies because he has some stash of Nazi gold hidden somewhere.  But, in 2009, something of an anomaly happened.  Uwe Boll made a rather decent film.  That film was Rampage; the story of a young man sent over the edge with rage that he goes on a killing spree in his hometown.  It was actually well received and found a fanbase NOT out of irony.  Uwe and star Brendan Fletcher return to the character of Bill Williamson in Rampage: Capital Punishment in what they hope is the second installment of a trilogy. The Blacklist – Season 1 (DVD Review)

Blacklist ThumbOne of last year’s biggest new dramas for network television and sort of a show to help NBC in attempting to make a big comeback, was The Blacklist.  Its big selling point was that of actor James Spader, who has managed to turn himself into a television superstar in the last decade plus.  Not only was it met with ratings success, but critical acclaim came with it as well.  NBC has loved it so much it gave it both a second season and the coveted post-Superbowl time slot after the 2015 competition comes to a close.  I had never seen a second of the show aside from advertisements.  I’m usually hesitant about network TV dramas, but was intrigued by this one.   Continue reading ‘The Blacklist – Season 1 (DVD Review)’
