Alex Garland is one of our most interesting and hungry filmmakers working today. If he makes a movie, no matter your thoughts on the trailer or plot synopsis, you buy a ticket and you go. So far, so good. His latest, Men, came out at the start of the summer was met probably with the most mixed of his reviews and not much to brag about in box office receipts. Nonetheless, like his previous film Annihilation, perhaps people will find it or appreciate it after its too late. Lionsgate is bringing out to standard Blu-ray on August 9th. It comes only with one featurette in addition to the DVD version and digital copy. Perhaps a 4K upgrade could be in the cards down the road, but this looks to be it for now. You can order yourself a copy using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review down below at the bottom of this page.

25 years ago, The Shining in space came and went and really wasn’t the bees knees upon its arrival. However, over the years and people finally checking it out, Event Horizon has not only become a cult classic, but considered one of the best horror movies from the entirety of the 90s. So much so, that we celebrate its milestones with brand new home video releases each time. Paramount is now putting the film out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for the very first time and packing it up in a beautiful new steelbook. The release will carry over all the previous bonus features which come with the standard Blu-ray edition that is included here. You can pre-order it now and have it in time for release on August 9th by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows on at the end of the review.

The Lost City looked like a last hope for saving the box office and theater going from being only franchise tentpoles all the time. And hey – there are still some stars that’ll put the butts in the seats. There are few better at that than the incredible Sandra Bullock. She does her thing and people follow. Someone able to walk the line between big theater movies and Netflix original movies. This 100 million plus domestic earner will be hitting 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on July 26th. The release will come with a digital code (no back up Blu-ray, as per usual with Paramount), Atmos sound and a host of little quick featurettes to satisfy post-viewing. You can order yourself a copy to own by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

Edge of Tomorrow was a film we all couldn’t shut up about 8 years ago. We were all debating on how better it could have been marketed or released with the studio even going by a tagline more than its title when it first came to home video. Nonetheless, its live to be a sort of modern cult film in that people loved it but not enough people ever really saw it. And it must be such a well doer on home video as Warner Bros has put it out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Released on July 5th, it has a new Atmos track and comes with all the bonus feature that had been released on the prior Blu-ray. If you’d like to own yourself a copy of Edge of Tomorrow, you can use the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

Seeing the announcement of Devil in a Blue Dress as an upcoming 4K release from the Criterion Collection was a great joy. An underperformer at the time of its release, only to find more appreciation as the years have gone why, this period thriller starring Denzel Washington brings together two major ideas – a neo-noir detective story starring a black lead and the social realism of what it meant to be black in 1948 America. Featuring several great performances and plenty of style, thanks to director Carl Franklin and his team, the film is terrific. Thanks to Criterion, the film now looks and sounds better than ever, with a couple of new extras to round out the package.

Paramount+ has been overloading us with Star Trek shows since back when it was called CBS All Access. Year round there is some Star Trek show currently putting out new episodes and sometimes they’ve even had themselves some overlap. However, the one with the least amount of stakes and one with loads of light-hearted and deep Trek enjoyability has been the Adult Swim-ish Lower Decks. The animated sensation’s second season will be coming to Blu-ray on July 12th and will include multiple featurettes that go over specific episode details, as well as full on season overview. You can pre-order yourself a copy now to have when it arrives next week by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

Paramount Presents continues to be a label that not only surprises and endures the passion of home video collecting every month, it supplies a varied catalog of all shapes and sized from different genres, eras, filmmakers, stars and more. On June 28th, they released the 1996 superstar comedy The First Wives Club to their arsenal. It features a brand new 4K restoration of the film and a new Filmmaker Focus featurette with the film’s screenwriter. The team up of Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler is one for the ages and the film was one of the bigger comedy success stories from the 90s. You can now finally own it (Probably overdue for making it to the format, no?) by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of this page.

OK, confession time… I’ve never seen a second of the Downton Abbey TV series. Beloved as it is, I never thought the show would hold my interest. Be that as it may, some force of nature propelled me to put my hat in the ring to receive a review copy of this, the second installment of the Downton Abbey film series. Subtitled A New Era, something intrigued me to take a look into the world of the Crawley family, with the matriarch, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) and her son Robert, the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) at the lead. What I encountered was a lovely world I was pleasantly enthralled with. Read more about the new film below, and be sure to get your copy by clicking the paid link that follows the review!

The Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (or Fantastic Beasts) series of adventures to continue the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, while ducking in to the events prior to the flagship story, hasn’t caught on as the folks behind them probably would have hoped for. The first film was generally received well, but its sequel seemed to fall off for most audiences. The Secrets of Dumbledore is attempt to both right the ship and to tie things up a bit in case the ship is too far underwater to get ashore. Warner Brothers is putting it out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray with an Atmos track and a nice array of bonus features on June 28th. So that means its available now and you can order yourself a copy using the paid Amazon Associates link following the review.

The Bad Guys has been a series with me for a few years, having younger ones. My son has been into it for quite a while and when it came to the movie coming out I got to be a “I know what this is” asset to my film friends who had no idea where this animated flick was coming from. And it release to solid reviews which, knowing the source material, didn’t surprise me as it had them. Now its come home to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray where it can continue to find audience. They are touting this as a Collector’s Edition primarily based on the fact it includes a brand new short as a bonus feature. The disc was released on June 21st, so you can order it now as you see fit. You can use the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review if you’d like as well.

Eddie Murphy’s 1992 romantic dramedy film Boomerang is one I’ve been eagerly awaiting a Blu-ray debut for over the years. Its pretty star studded and one of his best “I’m kind of the straight man now, no longer the goofball” movies of his that he would go on to do throughout the 90s. Paramount is finally putting the film (along with the Richard Pryor team up Harlem Nights) on Blu-ray on June 28th. The film will come with some deleted scenes and a commentary form its director. You can pre-order yourself a copy of the flick, which is super cheap for day one pricing, by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows this very review. Boomerang is a film I hope people take to revisiting with its 30th anniversary approaching and maybe they (or you) can do so with this brand new Blu-ray edition.

George Steven’s big Western epic, which happened to house the final performance of James Dean in a lead role (More of a supporting one honestly, but I’ll go with the tagline here), is coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Giant is legendary for that Dean finality, but its much more than that. It was a major player in the Academy Awards, being nominated nine times, though on taking home the director trophy for Stevens. This 4K Ultra-HD disc only comes with a commentary track previously released and carries over none of the other previous bonus feature. You’ll be able to order it when it releases on June 21st. And that can be done by using the paid Amazon Associates link that is all the way at the bottom of this review.

One of the year’s most original films and “Wait what? I HAVE to see that” concepts has come in the form of a tribute to one of cinema’s most noted thespians and film geek himself, Nicholas Cage. Playing himself in a movie about him caught up in a secret operation is a whirlwind of awesome that is one of the year’s best hooks. Said film was released to good reviews but didn’t quite hit like the internet demand may have hinted it would. Nonetheless, it exists and that’s all that really matters in this case. That film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is now available on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray (released on June 21st). It comes with Dolby Atmos sound and nice little array of extras to keep the fun going after the credits have rolled. You can order yourself a copy of the film by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

For the month of June, Warner Archive Collection is clearly celebrating the centennial of the birthday of film icon Judy Garland. With three of her films making their debut on the format, there’s no doubt that was the idea. One of which is the 1945 film, The Clock, that co-stars Robert Walker and is directed by her future husband (And Liza’s dad), Vincente Minnelli. The disc will come with a nice handful of extras that either relate to the film or the era when it was released. It was released on June 14th and you can order yourself a copy by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the reviews.

Robert Eggers has quickly shot up everyone’s favorite indie director’s list with only 3 films under his belt. With a terrific debut in The VVitch and equally awesome follow up The Lighthouse, its easy to see why. In a sea of lots of safe and monotone looking films we see in the blockbuster market, his quirks, weirdness and visuals are of the most refreshing lot. Granted, he’s not for everyone as people who aren’t the biggest film buffs probably have them in the “terrible column”. But for them, his latest film The Northman felt like a bridge between the abstract and mainstream for him. And you’ll be able to check out his Viking tale on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ay. I released back on June 7th with plenty of bonus material in tow. You can order yourself a copy of the film from the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

What do you think of when you hear the name Michael Bay. Some would say toxic masculinity. Some would say over the top. Some would say style over substance. There are also some that would say action film icon, auteur of mainstream cinema or underrated genius. I can put myself somewhere in the middle. The Rock is one of the finest action films of the 90’s or any decade. It’s big, loud, implausible and a whole lot of fun. Armageddon and Pearl Harbor are two of the most overlong, lazily plotted slogs through film that I’ve ever seen. They’re all from the same director. The same can be said even for franchise work from Bay. Bad Boysand Bad Boys II are two wildly different films to me. One works in a nice tight structure, while the other bloats like me after a big meal. This is all of course in my humble opinion… but why do I ask these questions and make these claims? For the purpose of this review’s exploration of Ambulance. This is Bayhem on a grand scale, but just so slightly different. Check out the details below and be sure to snag a copy of Ambulance using the paid Amazon Link!
