It’s that time of the year again. The time we start blitzing you with all the happenings that will be going down this July at Comic-Con 2010. The fever is in the air and I could not be more excited about it, especially when you are talking about the Starz original series Spartacus. Few TV shows have touched me like Spartacus has this past year. Not only did I never expect to like it, but my cheap arse also subscribed to a premium cable channel just so I didn’t miss a heart pounding moment. And of course… you are reading it for the story, right? Well don’t worry. In case you missed it last year, there’s always this year. I’ve been telling you all along we have been saving the best Comic-Con 2009 “Exclusive” coverage for last and this story is certainly no exception. Actually, there’s really no story to be told here. This article is more of a visual journey to take in some of the more memorable sights, or should I say women, of Comic-Con 2009. With that being said, if your significant other walks in on you while viewing this page you can simply use the age old excuse that you are reading for the articles of course. Without further ado I present, in pictures, the women of Comic-Con 2009. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #18 – The Women of Comic-Con!’

If you scout the vendor floor at Comic-Con, you’ll find your senses under attack from all possible angles. There are authors, artists, filmmakers, celebrities, store owners and big companies all trying to attract your attention with a barrage of advertising and showcasing. It’s easy to miss something when you are out and about in this area of the San Diego Convention Center. Nevertheless, there was one particular booth that did successfully capture my eye without the need of someone convincing me to step closer. The 6,000 seat capacity Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center was the location for the Kick-Ass discussion panel. Yes I’m being serious and if the ‘me’ from two weeks ago is like most people out there, then we are on the same page in not having a clue what the rather blunt title refers to. Truth be told, it started out as a small independent comic from creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Now it’s a full-fledged film featuring the likes of Nicholas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Role Models) and Aaron Johnson (The Illusionist). Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #16 – Kick Ass’

You know life is really hard when you have to labor an hour of your time helping your photographer arrange and take pictures of 17 scantily clad metal bikini wearing girls. Such was the painful work I suffered through on Friday, July 24th at the Comic-Con exhibit hall booths of Gentle Giant and Lucasfilm. I am being facetious, but of course. I actually somewhat enjoyed myself! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #15 – The Leia’s Metal Bikini Photo Shoot’

Making his Comic-Con debut in 2009 was accomplished writer and director, Terry Gilliam. Not familiar with his work? I’d bet the farm that you are so let me connect the dots. Gilliam has worked on such films as Life of Brian, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and what will go down in film history as one of the most popular comedies of all time, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Minnesota native was in San Diego to talk about the release of his latest work, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Another major attraction at this year’s Comic-Con was G4’s Attack of the Show booth. I’m sure its popularity had nothing to do with the beautiful host and Playboy covergirl, Olivia Munn, always hanging around the booth. I can honestly attest to never seeing the show, however I now see what the appeal is, especially to the young male audience. Olivia earned the crowd’s attention no matter where she was at, and trust me, she was everywhere there. She could be seen participating in panels like the official Lucasfilm panel – Star Wars Spectacular!, signing autographs in the autograph alley, giving away free movie passes and even broadcasting live from the G4 booth. Hailed as one of the greatest Halloween films of the past 30 years is a pretty significant accomplishment for a movie that has never been released theatrically. If you were one of the lucky ones admitted into Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con on July 23rd, then you already know the appeal Trick ‘r Treat will have on the countless number of horror fans upon its eventual home video release. The tagline says it all. “Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what happens next.” All right, so maybe it does not, but while I found myself waiting in Hall H for the Kick Ass panel I was treated to a sneak preview of clips showcasing Paul Anderson’s upcoming film Pandorum. It kind of feels like Resident Evil in space if I had to sum it up in one sentence. Paul Anderson always knows how to please sci-fi action junkies so I am sure he won’t disappoint here. The plot of Pandorum pits two crewmembers together waking up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they’ve been asleep or what their mission is. They soon discover they’re actually not alone and the result is more horrifying than they could ever have imagined. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #11 – Overture Films: Pandorum’

During my stroll of the vendor floor at this year’s Comic Con, which can often cause sensory overload, I happened to be confronted by one very attractive woman selling copies of some comic book signed by actor/model/writer Tyrese Gibson. “Sure,” I thought. “I’ll buy one!” Upon which I was immediately herded into a line that led to who-knows-where, but I didn’t care. If there is one thing readily available at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con, well, it’s comics. I was privileged enough to speak with a handful of individuals in the industry during my time there this year. It was an enlightening experience to see how the process of working on a book plays out, from start to finish. There are a lot of great comic books out there today. Unfortunately, there are a lot of stagnant ones out there too. However, I recently came across one particular title that fits the former, not the latter. Hollyvood is a new series recently released by writer/director Vem and his writing partner Steven Thadeus. The story features a lonely immigrant on his travels from Eastern Europe to the United States in hopes of fulfilling his American dream. Why do I say ‘his’ and not ‘the?’ Well, as you’ll find out in the pages of Hollyvood, everyone has their own version of the American dream. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con Update #8 – Hollyvood’

On the final day of this year’s Comic Con was the Women of Marvel panel. No, Rogue and She-Hulk were not present. These were the talented women that work at Marvel who assemble a wide array of those stories we love to read. Panelists included (but were not limited to) editor Jen Grünwald, colorist-extraordinaire Laura Martin and the brilliant mind of writer Marjorie Liu. I remember at last year’s Comic-Con extravaganza seeing all these True Blood signs and Tru Blood advertisements, not knowing what they were really for. I just figured out it was some kind of brilliant marketing scheme, which it was of course. I thought they were for a real beverage that actually existed. Was I ever wrong at the time. I was only drawn to all the signs, advertisements and banners due to my love for vampire lore. Almost a year later, I would discover the sheer appeal of True Blood after watching Season 1 of the HBO television show on Blu-ray and through talking to fellow co-workers about the crazy plot lines. You got to love them! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #6 – True Blood Panel and Q&A Session’

OK…so here is a panel I almost skipped in favor of hanging out in the exhibit hall. I was also encouraged to stand in line early for the 24 panel later that day, but for some reason I chose to stand in line for the Warner Bros. movie panel, a choice I will never regret. I can’t believe how many celebs were in attendance here for this panel. This panel was definitely one of the highlights of Comic-Con 2009…for me at least. Not only did I get to see Megan Fox in person, but also Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington, Cameron Diaz and many more! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #5 – Warner Bros.’

Here’s a movie screening we unfortunately were not able to make this past Friday night at Comic-Con 2009, but I felt like I owe a BIG plug to their publicist for his kindness and hospitality in inviting us to the premiere of it at San Diego’s Pacific Theatres Gas Lamp Theatre. From the previews shown on TV alone, this is a MUST-SEE for me this coming weekend! What movie am I talking about? Oh yeah…I guess I should mention that huh? Well the movie needs no introduction, as The Collector will be thrilling and gathering victims this Friday, July 31st. The Collector is brought to you by the ingenius minds of director/writer Marcus Dunstan and writer Patrick Melton (FEAST, SAW IV, V & VI). Need I say more? Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #4 – The Collector’
