Synecdoche, New York (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

In the 1990s, independent films were on the rise and studios like Miramax were at the forefront of distribution. Many studios created a separate wing to focus on and gather the independent, documentary, art house and international films under a single banner away from the blockbusters and bigger star studded fare. Sony Pictures developed Sony Pictures Classics for this very reason in 1992. And for the 30th Anniversary of the studio’s formation, they will be putting out a 4K Ultra-HD box set with 11 films from the course of their history, including 10 that are making their debut on the format. This review covers Charlie Kaufman and Philip Seymour Hoffman teaming up for the 2008 film Synecdoche, New York. You can order yourself a copy of this impressive box set, which would make a fantastic gift for that special cinephile in your life, using the paid Amazon Associates link below. Malcolm X – The Criterion Collection (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

malcolm xDirector Spike Lee has an impressive body of work, considering the number of excellent films delivered over the past five decades. With that in mind, the prolific director has at least two defining films that came pretty early in his career. There’s the landmark comedy-drama Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, the epic biographical drama depicting the life of the famous Black activist. While having received two Oscar nominations (Best Actor for Denzel Washington and Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter), I look at Malcolm X as being one of the most important films to not be nominated for Best Picture. Of course, that hasn’t stopped its legacy from building over time. Now, for its 30th anniversary, the Criterion Collection has seen fit to release the film in a deluxe 4K UHD Blu-ray package, complete with new extras and a fantastic new transfer.

Reservoir Dogs (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

While Lionsgate has had plenty of fun providing 4K upgrades for the most popular hits in their bargain bin collection, it’s nice to see the studio finally provide this proper 4K release for Quentin Tarantino’s debut film, Reservoir Dogs. An indie cult classic from the early 90s, here’s a film that’s oozed cool all the way through thanks to the combination of a fiery set of character actors led by the intense Harvey Keitel, and its sharp ear for dialogue filled with profanity and pop culture references that would define Tarantino for a good portion of his career. This new release delivers the best way to watch the film at home. While it may be light on extras, the rewatchability remains plenty intact.

Three Thousand Years Of Longing (Blu-ray Review)

Before George Miller returns to the wastelands of the Mad Max realm for the upcoming Furiosa, he’s dropped upon us his first original live action non-sequel, non-franchise film since 1992’s Lorenzo’s Oil. Three Thousand Years of Longing was one of the many original films released in the end of summer in August that looked like something to stand out from the pack. But alas, and like clockwork, people didn’t really bolt out to see it. While its been available on digital for a couple months, its now coming to disc on 4K and standard Blu-rays. Unfortunately, zilch has been included for bonus features. This particular review will be covering the standard Blu-ray edition. You can order a copy of the older format by using the paid Amazon Associates link at the bottom of the page.
