WonderCon 2014: 20th Century Fox Presentation Part 2: The Maze Runner, Secret Service & X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-009So here is the second half of 20th Century Fox’s presentation at WonderCon.  Be sure to check out Part 1 HERE, but this post will cover a number of films presented by Fox in the Anaheim Convention Center’s Arena on Saturday at WonderCon.  The popular young adult book, The Maze Runner, has a feature film on the way and the cast and crew were on hand to discuss it and show off some clips.  A surprise presentation of the upcoming Matthew Vaughn/Mark Millar reteaming, Secret Service, took place as well.  Lastly, some more light was shed on one of the most hotly anticipated films of the summer, X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Once again, there were plenty of reasons to have fans excited, so read on to learn more about what people seemed to be losing their minds over (there’s probably a Professor X joke in there somewhere).

WonderCon 2014: 20th Century Fox Presentation Part 1: How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

dawn_of_the_planet_of_the_apes_a_p-00120th Century Fox had the biggest block of time to work with on Saturday at WonderCon and they used it to deliver presentations for four of their upcoming, big budget movies, with one surprise look at another film as well.  Because of the expansive line-up of films presented, I figured it would be best to split this post in two, so for ‘Part 1’ I am focusing on How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, arriving in June and July this summer.  As How To Train Your Dragon has many fans, this is a hotly anticipated animated sequel that is sure to be a big (possibly the biggest) hit this summer.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is coming off of much love received both from audiences and critics, who were surprised to be quite pleased by Rise of the Planet of the Apes back in 2011.  Continue on to read about the presentations for both films. Note: Updated with first 5 minutes of How To Train Your Dragon 2.

WonderCon 2014: Lucy

lucy-trailerWith the panel for the upcoming EuropaCorp-produced, Universal Studios-distributed film Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson, I believe I found myself more intrigued by the fact that writer/director Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Leon, The Fifth Element) would be at WonderCon, rather than being psyched about the film itself.  That said, the trailer premiered a few weeks ago and many have seemed pretty psyched about it.  I can say I was fine with the trailer that initially debuted, especially since it looked like a film Besson may have actually put more of himself into it, like his earlier films, rather than the last few features we have seen from him (The Family), but I was not necessarily blown away in the same way others were.  Having said that, this was a fun presentation, complete with an enjoyable (and sometimes awkwardly humorous) conversation with Besson and some clips that have really turned me around on looking forward to the film.  Read on to learn more about this film panel presentation.

WonderCon 2014: Warner Bros. Presentation – Edge of Tomorrow, Into The Storm, and Godzilla

edgeSaturday was the big day at WonderCon, as far as the big studio films were concerned, as the Anaheim Convention Center’s Arena had a back-to-back-to-back-to-etc. lineup of movie studios showing off some of their upcoming big action/sci-fi movies.  The morning kicked off with Warner Brothers, who were proud to show off new footage from Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Into The Storm 3D featuring The Hobbit’s Richard Armitage, and lastly Godzilla, which looks like it could prove to be either one of the biggest films of this summer or at least the one with the biggest creature(s) involved.  Read on to learn more about this presentation.

WonderCon 2014: ‘Salem’ Panel

salem whysoblu thumbSo I am attending WonderCon in Anaheim this weekend and while the big guns are being saved for Saturday, I did manage to do a few things on Friday, which may be of interest.  Aside from walking the exhibit floors and interviewing the folks from Son of Batman, which I wont be able to see until Sunday, I did manage to check out the panel for Salem, the upcoming supernatural period drama, which airs its first episode on WGN Sunday, April 20th. nbff thumb 2014As stated in the previous post, the 15th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival is coming soon (opening night is April 24th) and there will be many films and festivities I plan to see and be a part of.  This post contains the official press release concerning the closing night film, which I am very excited about.  Chef is a return for Jon Favreau to his low-budget roots and after just seeing the trailer, which features a strong cast and what looks to be cinematography based around food that will have everyone salivating throughout, I am super excited to be able to catch it.  Check out the rest of this post to read the official press release regarding this closing night film and I have also embedded the trailer for Chef.

WORLD-PREMIERE OF ‘LOVESICK’ OPENS THE 15th ANNUAL NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL ON THURSDAY, APRIL 24

nbff thumb 2014So it begins.  For the past few years I have been covering the annual Newport Beach Film Festival and the time is upon us for me to get really busy covering it again.  Staring April 24th, I will be doing my part to attend the festival, which includes hitting up parties (poor me), putting some eyes on the red carpet now and again, maybe talking with some stars and filmmakers, but most importantly – seeing a lot of movies (many in the same day) and providing reviews for everything I get to see.  Last year I took a different approach, which proved to be much more efficient, so I plan to continue that this year and hopefully see even more films.  While the festival does not start for another couple of weeks, this post and the next post concern the announcement of the opening and closing films for the 15th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival.  Continue on to find out more.

“Lethal Ladies Of Horror” Resurrected In Los Angeles On March 29th

Artwork page 2-001It’s back!  So last year an announcement was made for a horror-themed movie marathon, the “Lethal Ladies of Horror,” featuring a specific set of films being screened at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, with all kinds of cool giveaways, props from the films, and Q&As with cast and crew.  Unfortunately, the event was cancelled.  Good news has recently emerged though!  The marathon is back and it has dropped off the weakest film in the original lineup in favor of adding an even better film to make a strong set of films to screen.  On March 29th, at the Famed Crest Theatre Westwood in Lost Angeles, the new “Lethal Ladies of Horror” will be screening Night of the Comet, Christine, and Drag Me to Hell.  This event is being brought to audiences by the same folks involved in putting together the “Evil Dead Fest” last year, which screened all four Evil Dead films and was a ton of fun.  This means the films will have a lot of additional fun going on in between movies and within the theater lobby as well, which includes Q&As with cast and crew from the films, prize giveaways, props from the film (such as a very specific car) and more!  Additionally, I have an interview from the stars of Night of the Comet, Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney, (HERE) originally done last year in honor of the recent Scream Factory Blu-ray release.  Stewart and Maroney will be among the guests in attendance for a Q&A on the night.  Continue on to learn more about this exciting, upcoming event.

‘The Americans’ Season 1 Blu-ray/DVD Release Party

american thumbIt was a bit humorous that the party celebrating the upcoming release of the FX series, The Americans, was occurring on the same day as the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.  For those unfamiliar, The Americans is a series revolving around undercover Russian spies in 1980s Washington D.C.  Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star as a seemingly normal, suburban couple, who are actually lethal KGB agents.  The first season revolves around these two working together to continue their mission, while staying hidden as spies in plain sight.  It also takes a lot of time to expand on the lives these two have shared, making the audience root for these two to keep this fake, but not necessarily non-emotional, marriage alive.  I very much enjoyed the first season and was happy to enjoy the festivities celebrating the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release.  This post details the event as well as the conversation I was a part of, with the producers of the series, who were very happy to talk about it.

Elysium’s Google Hangout with Visual Effects Supervisor Peter Muyzers

Peter Muyzers - www.whysoblu.comWhy So Blu? was given a special opportunity to “hangout” with Elysium visual effects supervisor Peter Muyzers yesterday morning, as they broadcasted live from Las Vegas at the Cave visual effects convention. Several folks from Autodesk moderated the Google Hangout. Since we’re also going to be reviewing Elysium on this very website soon, it made perfect sense to cover the event, so that we may pair the two pieces together to give fans better coverage of the science fiction epic. Aside from a few technical hiccups during the live feed, the Google Hangout was fun and informative. The following post is more of a free-form post as opposed to a word-for-word transcription. We will also link to the Google Hangout, so that you can also view it at your leisure.   Continue reading ‘Elysium’s Google Hangout with Visual Effects Supervisor Peter Muyzers’

Austin Comic Con: Artist Rob Guillory

Even after taking home an Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series, I’m still going to argue that the documented work of Tony Chu does not get nearly enough credit. Chew, written by John Layman and drawn by Rob Guillory, has had significant ongoing success; enough to draw (no pun intended) artist Guillory to the 2013 Austin Comic Con. The master with a marker filled me in a few details on the future of Chew as well as his own future works.

Austin Comic Con 2013: A Few Wizard World Videos & Costumes

Wizard-World-ConAfter covering the craziness that was San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, what a breath of fresh air Wizard World’s Austin Comic Con was.  The people were nicer.  The crowds were manageable and most importantly, tolerable.  And the spotlight was on satisfying you…the paying customer.  As an attendee you were able to check out all the panels you wanted to, interact and move freely around the expansive convention center’s showroom shopping at your favorite vendor’s booth or meeting the artists whose work you adore and were even afforded meet and greet opportunities with some of your favorite movie and television stars of yesterday and today.  I know even as a member of press I took advantage of these aforementioned opportunities and I very much enjoyed and appreciated my time there. Austin Comic Con: Super Villains and Psychology

One of the final panels I attended at this past weekend’s Austin Comic Con was titled “Super Villains and Psychology.” It sounded interesting enough on the ride to the convention center, so I figured what the heck. I’ll give it a go. Let’s delve into the mind of the Joker, Dr. Doom and whoever else’s fictional brain we can dissect and study. Headlined by psychologist and author, Dr. Travis Langley, this expert of the mind was the catalyst for one of the most incredibly interesting discussions I have ever come across at any pop culture convention.

Austin Comic Con 2013: One-On-One With Giancarlo Esposito

imageAh…Giancarlo Esposito…what can I even say about this man? This guy had me the minute he said hello in Los Pollos Hermanos in TV’s Breaking Bad. God! How I miss the man. You always have your fair share of villains you love in movies, but for me it’s a rarity in the world of television. As soon as his character Gus was introduced to us onscreen, I wanted to know all I possibly could about the man and most importantly his chicken brand. Lol. The guy was a complete mystery and an enigma to me and for many reasons he was my favorite villain ever to grace prime time television and I miss him dearly. I later caught up with the man on some ghost program this year where he professed to living in a haunted house before. So I don’t care what it is. If he’s in it, I will watch it. And that’s exactly why I’m here today on a brutally cold Sunday morning at Austin Comic Con to see my favorite television villain chat with his fans in Ballroom F. The following is my recount of the candid conversation.

Austin Comic Con 2013: Bruce Campbell Vs. The Audience

imageI’m not much of an Evil Dead groupie, but I respect it for what it was. I love most of Raimi’s work and let’s face it, what’s not to love about actor Bruce Campbell? The man’s quick witted that’s for sure. This was probably the rowdiest Comic Con panel I’ve seen in a long time. Bruce reminded me of a game show host the way he patrolled and controlled the stage on foot with his hand held mic. He immediately began by asking the audience how far they travelled to come here today and ended up giving a guy from Mexico City $5 for gas. No joke! Here’s a little more that went down tonight in the almost hour long Bruce Campbell comedy stand up show. Who needs a table, right? Continue reading ‘Austin Comic Con 2013: Bruce Campbell Vs. Austin Comic Con 2013: It’s ‘Just Another Zombie Love Story’

book squareDays 1 and 2 of the Austin Comic Con are in the books and it was the usual fun and sensorary overload to be found on the exhibitors floor. Actors such as R.I.P.D.‘s James Hong and The Walking Dead‘s Laurie Holden were found strolling about. Fans could be found adorned in the threads of their favorite superhero or steam punk attire. And then there is the merchandise. Yes, sensory overload indeed, but amidst all the artwork and collectibles stood a writer and his book.

Austin Comic Con 2013: A Conversation With Robert Rodriguez

imageI kind of find it very funny or maybe even a little ironic in the fact that I would see Robert Rodriguez each and every summer at Comic-Con in beautiful downtown San Diego. And now that I moved to the man’s main town in Austin, TX this past February, I have not bumped into him once. Weird, huh? One of my favorite Rodriguez moments had to be in front of his taco truck in San Diego when he was out promoting the first Machete film. I actually got thrown out from the press event because I snapped a picture of the man on my cell phone. How unprofessional, huh? Well, many years have separated that mistake and as a result I’m not only more of a professional now, but I also have a much bigger camera. See guys, it is the size of your instrument! LOL.
